Jeff if you go with a 7870, look into the XT. They are basically "crippled" 7950s. Easily the best perfomancr per dollar because you get the performance of a 7950, but only 2gb of vram and a smaller bit bus (won't make a difference at 1080p)
What is the difference between the xt and the ghz edition?

Powercolor has been having sales on there "XT" model, but I forgot what its called. Been as low as $209.99, but it sells out in a heartbeat.
I bought my RAM from superbiz and it went well. I prefer to spend an extra $5-10 to get free 2 day shipping from newegg/amazon

Decided to overclock my phenom today and run some benchmarks for fun. All this gfx card shopping making me want upgrades, hah.

damn i didnt even realize this topic was here, wish i had the time to go back through all 12 pages.
Heres a stupid question for you knowledgeable gentlemen, does it matter if you go with a intel processor/amd gfx card?
or is there an advantage of going amd for both?

No and there is a theory that we have discussed where you may even be better off not pairing 2 amd's. Either way I believe you should be ok though.

Today I learned not to try and run a 3.4 ghz Phenom @ 4 GHz with my cooling configuration
3.7 its performing well though. 4.0 had me resetting the cmos

Doesn't really matter. Different games use different cards different so if you have a game and CPU in mind, find the best gpu for your top 5 games

UPDATE:
MOBO is a goner. Shot. dead. worthless....
MicroCenter guy was able to tell me that within about 2 minutes of plugging it up. Said my power supply looks fine.
So....they have a sale going on where if you purchase a processor and matching mobo, you get $50 off.
So, he recommended on what I had in mind as far as a setup:
CPU: Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz LGA 155 Processor ($189-$50)
Mobo: Z77A-G41 LGA 1155 ATX Intel Motherboard ($94)
Here's where it gets fun.
- Obviously my current RAM won't work either. So to replace 8GB that's another $50.
- And he isn't sure if my OS will work, even tho Intel. So, I'll likely want to upgrade to SSD ($$$ ?)
sigh. the whole "i'll upgrade over time" a piece a month idea, yeh out the window, thx mobo...
I'm gonna order a new case today. And probably pull the trigger sometime next week on the rest. Too busy to build this week anyhow.
Thoughts? Jeff/Stout/Coyote
No it's no a super PC, but all i need is low-end gaming, photoshop work, Virtual Machine work, and basi web browsing.

I think i would like to play some dayZ with you. So i think you should just dow whatever it takes and do it as soon as possible.

You could get the i5 2500K and save some cash. You could always overclock it later if you wanted to upgrade.

when I have looked the 2500k has been about the same price as the 3570k for some reason. sounds like you are doing a whole new build, Hate that it works out that way. SSD's are great I hear but they are expensive so you don't have to no matter what this board says. Maybe just get about a 120gb ssd for your OS and main programs.

Wow really?! I have it in my build now and I paid about 75 dollars less for it than the 3750k was listed.

I like my 3570k but a lot of people still stand by their 2500. They're really pretty equivalent. You don't have to do an ssd, but if you are considering adding one at any point in the future I would go ahead and do it. Doing a clean OS install sucks. I fit windows 7 on a 60gb ssd with a little room to spare. Would be a good option if you already have a large hdd.

I didn't look hard but everytime I saw one it was about the same so I said screw it.

alrite. Do you want a build based on
-cheap as possible.
- hybrid of performance and budget
- great performance
Intel chips are great and all but an AMD chip can get you comparable results for a fraction of the cost. No, you wont score as high on benchmark tests but for what i think you need a computer for, id go AMD.
You can get a 3.4 ghz phenom chip for 80ish and a mobo for 50ish. thats 130ish for a mobo and chip that will run just fine. Spend $30 on a CPU cooler, overlock ure 3.4 ghz up to 3.6.. install your new 650 TI and then the RAM upgrade (50 bucks)
bring all your old shite over into your new case... install your OS onto HD(can get buy without an SSD at first. get an SSD later for a hundred if you must)
potential remaining out of pocket: $300ish if you play it right
Is that deal, for $50 off, based on the i5 3750k along with that specific motherboard? That is a great price for that chip for sure
$190 - $50 = $140 + 85 = $225 for this i5 3.4 ghz with mobo combo... solid, if my math and calcs are right

If you go AMD even if you get the 8350 you will get a high end cpu for about $30 cheaper then the 3570k.
I just realized the deal you mentioned from Microcenter so it may be better to just get the 3570k.

woops
8 gb max PER slot.
4 slots
32 gb max on that board.
I agree gardoki, but, if his Microcenter is running $50 off with this i5 and mobo combination.. thats a pretty good deal.
Cant go wrong with either. Just splitting ends and min/maxing really.

yeah, even still, if you dont NEED an 8 core 8350 or an i5 and can get by doing what you want with a Phenom for $100 or more cheaper.. why not?
while this i5 deal is a good one, i dunno if the price increase is justifiable for the intended use of the system.
