According to sources, we understand that currently Microsoft are planning a launch for Starfield on PlayStation 5 post the release of the already announced “Shattered Space” expansion for Xbox and PC, which is on target to arrive at some point later this year. We’ve also been informed that Microsoft have made additional investment into PlayStation 5 dev kits to support ongoing development efforts – adding further fuel to the fire.

This was some of the stuff that came out with the Activision Blizzard acquisition. An email from Pete Hines indicated they were all a bit annoyed that Microsoft was keeping Starfield from the PlayStation.

Xbox is about to become a dead platform.

It's abundantly clear at this point that Microsoft is about to become a full blown third party.

But we don't want that, right? You understand how expensive the PlayStation console is going to be if it's the only current gen console on the market?

More expensive than the $600 PS3 in 2006 that's $900 with inflation today? Not a chance.

Potentially, PS would no longer have to sell hardware at such a low margin. Additionally, I think you would see game prices go up to as PlayStation would be able to raise their platform fees up tremendously.

I don’t think Xbox is looking for a console-less strategy in the future, but I do think they will pivot in some way that they feel reduces PS market leadership.

There’s a very very real chance the next console generation will be their last to make hardware. They’re going to attempt to move into being the Netflix of games which isn’t a bad idea because no one buys a Xbox they are losing massive massive amounts of money on console production. If they’re smart they won’t go full retard like Disney and horde everything to game pass whatever form that takes in this era and actually takes advantage of extremely lucrative licensing deals to Sony and whatever inevitable competition rises to replace them in the console place. This could actually be an extremely smart move for Xbox since no one buys their console but they can use Microsoft money to just scoop studios

This topic isn’t new it’s been around for a while. Xbox will be in the next generation competing with ps6 but that’ll likely be it’s last. That’s 15 years ish for someone to rise into their spot. It will happen.

In theory if they have the desire and will to see it through which will take a ton of work they could pivot to being a legitimate Steam competitor with Microsoft money behind them. Drop the consoles completely because they lose sooooo much money on them this generation for their sales is an absolute embarrassment. It would likely take 10 years to get anywhere close to steams market share but they’d make 20x more money if they could rise to challenge steam than they do selling Xbox

I agree completely. I shudder to think of what kind of decisions Sony would make if they have complete control over the console market with zero competition.

But the news today is that Microsoft is going full multiplatform, which is pretty much the death knell for Xbox hardware.

Again I feel like I have to point out Xbox will be in the next generation as it’s likely last. We are in the middle of the current one so that is 15ish years for someone to take their place on the console market competing with Sony, hopefully with a better idea of how to drive consoles. Love or hate Sony first party games but it cannot be denied they have an identity and a shared DNA seen in them all.

Sega has been making moves to re enter the space seriously it could end up being them or someone we have never heard of yet

Consoles will never be over $500 again, barring boutique, deluxe-hardware versions for hardcore enthusiasts that don’t want to get a PC. Market has been established and we know what people will stomach before just electing to take the pc route

This. I'm prime in their demographic, have friends that want to play games online, but the prices they want are frankly insane.

Everything will be cloud based / streaming from a subscription service in 2-3 generations. They want you to own nothing and pay a monthly fee like we do for everything else these days. Hate it

Starfield doesn't suck, but it's not the world beater they thought it would be. It's a mile wide, inch deep.

I played for about 3hrs and realized that I still don't like Bethesda games. There is just something about the Fallout, Skyrim, Starfields that just turn me off.

Agree with this, good way to put it. It also feels like somehow Bethesda has not managed to improve their gameplay formula at all despite the fact that it's been the same for actual decades. Other studios are doing the first person RPG a lot better at this stage.

That, plus, literally half of your time playing Starfield will be either on loading screens or on things that are essentially loading screens (your ship), and when you aren't, you will spend most of your time sprinting across barren landscapes. You will actually play the game about 10% of the time.

Makes sense to release it on PS5. It's not good enough to draw in people to buy the console for it.
