none of these rumors have sources deeper than message boards and Twitter. Maybe the rumors are legit, but if you're expecting anything deep you're fishing in the wrong pond.

They could have saved themselves over a year of fighting with the government if they had made this announcement. Seems hard to believe a company would intentionally do that and would also show this is a massive internal shift in policy seemingly out of nowhere.

Is it possible that because of this….is why they would make a move like this?

I have no idea…just spitballing. Not sure what could have happened during those hearing that would make them reverse their stance.

I guess? To me, the only way a decision like this would make sense is if they're trying to purchase another large publisher. Removing exclusivity from their games could be a play to preempt regulator concerns, which would make sense based on the FTC's arguments in court. If that's not the play, I'm not seeing how this would make sense from a business standpoint.

If they aren't doing this to appease regulators, then this would look a lot like the SEGA/Google Stadia business strategy. Not a whole lot of upside there if you're trying to compete with PlayStation.

so The Verge somehow knows more than Phil Spencer just stated 20 minutes ago?

This is the level of absurdity surrounding these rumors.

i wonder what MS employee is leaking this information....?

it's pretty much a foregone conclusion that this is happening. we just don't know the "why" behind it.

3 reasons come to mind:

- they're not making their money back fast enough on the current list of exclusives
- acquiring a new publisher like you stated
- they're leaving the console market

it could be a combination of all 3. but the fact that phil didn't deny any of it basically confirms something is happening.

eta: i wouldn't be surprised if Sony has a hand in this with offering it's exclusives to MS.

This Discord leak from mid January (before the Xbox Developer Direct and Sony SOP) is now looking scary accurate.

2 of these make no sense to me. They haven't even put a single Call of Duty game or ABK game on Game Pass yet. It's extremely premature to be pulling the plug on that before at least giving this a shot. Maybe that's what they're going to do, but I don't see how reasonable people involved in these decisions could have landed on those conclusions.

Maybe, but I don't recall him making a lot of announcements on Twitter in the past. It doesn't strike me as out of character for him not to directly address rumors with a Tweet.

If they do end up removing exclusivity from their games, I wouldn't be surprised to see Phil Spencer step down. He's too good at the gaming business. He has to know this will end up as a colossal failure for Xbox.

This is something I didn't consider. If we're just talking about first-party games, I'm not sure I see a benefit there for Microsoft. Sony only had one first-party exclusive in 2023, and it didn't blow any of the Xbox exclusives away. The slate coming down the line isn't exactly moving the needle either. PlayStation isn't beating Xbox out for first-party exclusives at the moment.

Only way this would make sense for Xbox is if Sony were to sign an agreement to stop seeking and entering into arrangements for third-party exclusives for an extended period of time. Like 10 years, minimum. Perhaps the Activision deal gave Xbox the leverage to push something like this, because Sony admitted Call of Duty exclusives were a large portion of PlayStation's business model.

Does this mean PlayStation will do the same? Is there some agreement?

Would make sense in order to keep CoD

First time I've seen that. Has at least been right about the Indiana Jones stuff, but none of that is a huge stretch honestly. The rest would be quite shocking if it turns out to be true.

- Tim has heard that Call of Duty may not be coming to game pass.
- Hardware sales have not met the projected sales and the CFO got spooked.
- In the last three months of last year, they had consoles for $350 and no one cared.
- Xbox One was more wanted than Series consoles.
- They said the hardware is dead, and they are seeing declines in hardware year over year.
- Game pass is unsustainable; the market they have is not enough to offset the cost.
- Tim heard from someone at Microsoft that you may not like Xbox when they get Activision. They want ROI.
- He heard that Xbox has an insane showcase with tons of games, but everyone is going to be saying asterisks.
- The leaks happened because a Microsoft employee who didn't want this to happen leaked it, so there would be a public outcry.
- Microsoft now has no problem buying more companies in the future if all games go to all platforms.
- Tim thinks they will go all-digital, with ads on game pass (pre-roll or at the end of a chapter e.g. Like a Dragon) and AI community managers.

It could very well be that getting Activision forced Sony to the table with Microsoft on the exclusives issue.

Microsoft is doing this because they have no other choice. They dropped Bethesda's big new RPG last September and slashed Series X prices to $350 and it didn't move the needle. No one cared.

Now they've absorbed the operational costs of 20,000 employees from Activision and Blizzard and are forced to make a move.

Expect Game Pass to undergo structural changes that removes first party games as day one releases. It's just not fiscally viable anymore for Microsoft.

Sony and Nintendo have massive install bases and make absurd amounts of money from console and game sales - Microsoft has no such luxury. Xbox Series X|S sales *decreased* in 2023 by -15%, which is utterly horrible for a console in its third year (it's now lagging behind the Xbox One).

Microsoft has all these games, but no one to sell them to - hence why they're now about to tap into the massive user bases of both Nintendo and Sony.

Sony and Nintendo will keep their games on their own platforms because that's how they've grown such a massive installation base with their consoles.
