I recently downloaded Halo MCC to give it a spin for old time’s sake. I fired up some multiplayer and quickly realized that there are only two types of people who still play Halo:

1. People like me who haven’t played the game in ten years and who come back for nostalgia’s sake.

2. People who have done nothing but play the game for the last ten years.

Seriously, the skill gap is absolutely ridiculous. Generally in every match I play you have two or three players who rack up insane amounts of kills in a very short time, and then everyone else ends up with 5 or less. I’ll let you guess which group I fall into.

I got Halo MCC for the campaigns. Every now and then I play online.

And you are completely right, some of these people have done nothing but play Halo for years and years. Sometimes after I spawn, I would move around for 3 seconds and get shot by a sniper on the other end of the map, or someone would come out from behind a wall and kill me immediately. I have no chance against these fricks.

This is my argument for the downfall of the Halo player base. It is hard for new people to join in and play. The skill gap is huge and the TTK is so long that you can’t sit in a corner and camp to get a kill. Unless you have a shotgun which you have to take from someone else. I don’t know what the answer is.

I’ll throw in Halo 5 from time to time and I’m a plat player but I’m probably on the lower end of the active players. I need to play some MCC because I think most of the player base has moved to that anyway.

Has it become what everyone thought it would be or wanted it to be when it came out?

I know there were tons of bugs and everyone was complaining about it big time when it first released.

yeah it's great now... but like they said not very fun for us casuals to play. I am pretty good.. so when it's the people who havent played in 10 years i do good. but usually its 2 guys who have played religiously just getting every kill. I am good enough to kill them maybe 3 or 4 times. then turn it off

10+ year old games tend to do that

I remember when I fired up Medal of Honor Allied Assault in late 2008 or 2009 (I honestly can't remember), and I was slaughtered. In the early 2000's, I was a legit top 50 player, and was just murked by everyone in the few servers they had left.

Launch was a disaster, yeah, but thank God they have fixed it properly over the years. The game is in the state it should have been at launch.

I'm honestly just glad they didn't give up on it.

As for the skill gap, I can see that, although I don't deal with it as much just because I'm one of those guys who has been playing Halo regularly since I was still but a wee child
Ranked is naturally crazier than social playlists, so you can try and improve in social, although naturally you'll run into loaded players every now and then.
They recently implemented an update in social 4v4 to make teams of 3 & 4 face teams of 3 & 4 while teams of 2 or 1 face 2 or 1 setups. Very nice direction to take things.

Just got MCC myself. I got it for the campaigns, but good to know the state of online play. I used to be decent.

I imagine the online population isnt large enough to even the playing field yet. Maybe Halo: infinite will bring it back.

I get absolutely destroyed on PC Reach almsot every time and I'm usually solid at every other shooter and console Halo. It's been rough.

I am really hoping that MCC takes off again with the PC release.

I think the strategy will be to release MCC PC with Reach around E3 -and more info on Halo Infinite

Then pay all the streamers to play it and build hype and get people playing( ninja/shroud to mixer etc)
I believe that the Halos will be a perfect change of pace from all these Battle Royal games. No complaints or dying because someone got better weapons or more health. The TTK is a million times better than COD and allows for skill gap. The 1-50 ranking bless up

The initial complaint will be “slow pace” but that is ridiculous and will disappear with time.

Once the numbers get higher the matching will be more balanced.

And please god make Halo Infinite good. (I liked 5 but please go back to 2-3 roots)

Amazing. I love the Halo stories. I just got done playing Halo:CE Anniversary, Halo 2: anniversary, Halo 3 and Halo 4 campaign modes. Took me a few weeks but I love them.

If you havent played them before I really encourage it. Halo 1-3 is really good and while I personally thought the Halo 4 storyline was intriguing, I believe there was a decent amount of criticism. Halo 5 of course received significant criticism for making the campaign about the spartan team and having significantly less of the campaign about the master chief. It would be the equivalent to making super Mario and making 70% of the game about toad. The marketing for 5 was also deceiving and it was a poorly made campaign all the way around. All of the criticisms were apparently heard by 343 which is why in the trailers for infinite they show the old style spartan armor on chief. Infinite appears to be an attempt at getting back to the bungie version.

I need to get on it. Already beach Reach with a friend on the difficulty below Legendary. I need to beat this before DOOM Eternal comes out..
