Spencer, speaking to Kotaku, didn't elaborate on that stance, but did mention that Microsoft has no obligation to release games on platforms it doesn't control for the financial aspect of the deal to make sense.

"[W]e have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means," replied Spencer when asked about whether Microsoft will need to sell The Elder Scrolls VI on PS5 to recoup costs.

Damn that would be a pretty big blow for Sony. Can you imagine if the PS5 and 6 don't have Skyrim?

It would definitely be a big deal, but I'm pretty sure Skyrim will be playable on PS5.

Whatever, when was the last time you heard a billion, or even trillion, dollar company turn down money?

If that happens, I'll just buy an Xbox too.

It just makes no sense for me for Microsoft to buy Bethesda and then turn around and release their games on competitors' hardware.

Yes. Never played Skyrim and don’t intend to do so

for context, they asked him if he needed PS5 sales to make the deal work financially, and he just said he doesn't think so.

quote:

“Is it possible to recoup a $7.5 billion investment if you don’t sell Elder Scrolls VI on the PlayStation?” I asked.

“Yes,” Spencer quickly replied.

Then he paused.

“I don’t want to be flip about that,” he added. “This deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: ‘How do we keep other players from playing these games?’ We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games. But I’ll also say in the model—I’m just answering directly the question that you had—when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don’t have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means.”

You think a company known for building monopolies is gonna listen to you’re whining?

With the prices of these consoles the whole idea of exclusives needs to GTFO.

It is amusing that Sony could get a big financial hit from a monster of their own making

I always wondered if MS would break out their giant money stick and beat them over the head with it. Sony may have picked a gunfight with a knife.

Sony really needs to revisit that Konami deal. I love Fallout and am looking forward to Starfields. Don't know if I would necessarily buy a console for them though. I enjoyed MGS and God of War too but didn't miss them too much when I went with the 360 over PS3.

Spencer had been banging the drum about everyone playing together and it's the player that's the most important thing. I would be shocked if he withheld any Bethesda games from other platforms just for the hell of it.

Figured the OP wasn't the entire context.

Of course OP didn’t include this.

Agreed. MS seems pretty committed to just putting games in the people’s hands which is nice. I do think they could potentially use Bethesda and one other major acquisition to put some leverage on Sony to open up their exclusive approach.

Anyone who needed you to point this out is a moron. I refer you to the title of the thread:

ETA: and the last statement in the quoted text in the OP

quote:

Yes I did.

ETA: If y'all don't think this is Phil Spencer hinting at what they're looking at doing, you're simply seeing what you want to see. They've already stated previously that they'll make these decisions on a case by case basis. You don't make a purchase that large without getting some big exclusives out of it.
