It certainly is leverage for Microsoft. I don't mind each system having exclusives. I would just like to see an end to content exclusivity on multiplatform games this gen.

Why?

Because it makes zero sense to have two nearly-identical machines that can only play certain games.

There’s no technical reason for it.

Yep. This is the crap that needs to end, and that rests solely with Sony. They have no one to blame but themselves if Microsoft starts throwing money around and racking up exclusives.

There's no reason to have two nearly identical machines that both play the same games. Something has to differentiate them.

The hypocrisy of this board constantly blowing sony/PS for exclusives but now crying when Microsoft makes moves to do the same thing is hilarious.

It’s just stupid that you can’t put Bloodborne and Halo in the same console

The situations are a little different which is why they’re upset. Sony’s games have never been multiplats; they were all developed organically through Sony over many years. MS, on the other hand, just bought a bunch of studios that make traditional multiplats and made them 1st party studios since they couldn’t cultivate a decent studio on their own

Idc either way but I can see why people that get just one console are butthurt

just makes no sense for me for Microsoft to buy Bethesda and then turn around and release their games on competitors' hardware

For games that started out as PC games, they will.

They are doing it with minecraft, they just released it on PSVR, and that's the biggest game in the world.

If I had to guess, new franchises will be Xbox, but older franchises will be cross platform.

You also have the recent history of xbox and nintendo pushing cross platform

That makes no sense. The only reason Microsoft is having to make moves like this is because of Sony paying for third party titles to exclude XBox releases. Examples: Spider-Man games, FF16 (assuming that's not just a timed exclusive). I'm sure we could all easily think of others. Microsoft is simply playing the hand Sony dealt them.

What are you talking about? Sony owns the Spider-Man IP They’ve owned it for decades

I have no clue for final fantasy. In all likelihood, it’s probably an exclusive. Didn’t think people cared, they’re hasn’t been a good FF game since X.

MS has a terrible relationship with many Japanese companies, and so they miss out on several Japanese games. It's partially do to that, partially due to no Japanese fan base for Xbox. All that despite MS pioneering this practice early on in the 360 generation.

ETA: Was thinking about this more, was Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube the first big case of a company buying exclusivity? Trying to think back.

No, Sony does not own the Spider-Man IP for video games. They also don't own the Spider-Man IP for cartoons. They literally only own the IP for movies.

It's all because Sony pays them. Nothing more.

I get that...even as XBOX fan it kinda rubs me the wrong way,but I guarantee if Sony had the cash they would make those same moves.

The MGS games were PS exclusives for a long time until they had that MGS1 remake on Gamecube. I don't think any of them have appeared on Xbox. I believe all the Naughty Dog games have always been PS exclusive as well.

All MGS games (not counting twin snakes) were on all consoles except MGS1, which was PS1, and MGS4 on PS3. MGS4 was PS3 exclusive solely because Kojima needed Blu-ray Discs to accommodate the scale and scope of the game. PS3 was the only console with a Blu-ray drive at the time. I played MGS2 on Xbox first, though think it came out a year later

Sony has owned ND for like 20 years

It's actually more complicated than I made it out to be on the cartoons. This article breaks it down. Marvel has rights to Spider-Man cartoon shows under 44 minutes, Sony has the rights for over 44 minutes and live action TV shows and any theatrical releases. This effectively means Marvel has cartoon TV rights and Sony has the live action TV rights, but technically Sony could make an hour long Spider-Man cartoon show if they wanted.

Sony never had exclusive rights for Spider-Man video games though. Insomniac could have picked any Marvel character for their first PS Spider-Man game, and they chose Spider-Man. Presumably, they came to a similar arrangement for the Miles Morales game. LINK
