Do you consider playing video games as an adult to be "childish?"

Spin-off from an OT thread where many people posted video games as the most childish thing they still do.

I don't consider gaming to be childish at all, just like how I don't consider playing recreational sports as an adult to be childish.

Only if you shirk your adult responsibilities to play them. Which I do. So yes, I'm childish.

Isn't the average gamer in his early 30s now?

If you were born like me in the early 80s then we are a new generation.

It's akin to grown men playing shuffle board, darts, bean bag tossing with custome made boards, rec softball, basketball, etc

We just have better games

Depends on what you're playing.

Even for the Switch I think its mostly older guys playing Zelda and Mario for nostalgia than it is younger kids. Teens and kids aren't playing stuff like Dark Souls and RDR2.

The best part of the video game industry right now is the developers are the same age as the demographic they are creating video games for. They know what we want out of our video game experiences, and it’s showing in the product put out in the current generation games.

I'm 34 and I love video games.

I work 45-50 hrs per week and don't see anything wrong with having a few drinks while playing online with friends at night.

Hell, you'll do the same thing in a bar, just without the video game for entertainment.

I don’t think it’s childish but I miss how much I enjoyed them as a child/young adult. The magic disappears as you get older. I feel less compelled to play now compared to 5-10 years ago. Probably a blessing in disguise. Doesn’t help my cause that most of my IRL friends are not into gaming in any capacity.

It’s no different than being obsessed with film, sports, or any other passive media based hobby imo.

I work as an engineer for Halliburton frac. I play Pokémon emulators on location.

Better than staring at a graph of straight lines for 2.5 hours.

I wouldn't say childish, but it can be an addicting behavior that lets you neglect important things. Same as drugs, alcohol, sex, or most other vices / activities.

The big issues are when someone lets it take over their life to the point where they schedule everything around events within the game. MMOs, especially the World of Warcraft type MMORPGs, are extremely bad about this.

If your life could be represented by an episode of The Guild, you've got issues.

I figured mainly because the average OT falls into two camps: older Millennial or ancient Gen X/baby boomer type, no significant in-between.

The only people who still think video games are for children are old people, like 40+. Because their only experience with video games throughout their life was watching kids play them. In the 1980's and even into the 90's, video gamers on average skewed MUCH younger than they do today. However almost all those kids who grew up playing and are still playing today. And the new generations are playing as well. Pretty much every male under the age of 35-40 either plays video games or has a lot of friends that do.

That age will just continue to go up as well. People who like video games never really stop playing them. They may play less as they get older and have less free time. In another 20 years pretty much everyone under 60 will be playing video games to some degree.

Great analogy. Playing backgammon or chess is no more "mature" than video games inherently.

Video games are a very broad medium. Trying to paint them with the same definition is impossible. I mean, the people who say "video games are for kids" seem to not be aware there are M rated games that are not legally allowed to be sold to people under 17. People seem to grasp this concept with movies and TV but don't with video games and think of all video games like they are Kirby or something.

Is playing the Witcher 3 childish? Doesn't strike me as something a child would do.
