Not a good look.

Last year, the bosses of CD Projekt Red approached me for an interview. They wanted to announce that for Cyberpunk 2077, they would be avoiding mandatory crunch.
This week, they sent out an email to staff announcing studio-wide mandatory crunch.

Many developers on Cyberpunk 2077, one of the most hotly anticipated games of 2020, have been working overtime hours for months if not years now. But this call for six-day work weeks, "mandatory" crunch, directly reneges on what CDPR's bosses told me last year.

One of the major complaints in the gaming industry is the crunch.
They better have some incentives for those developers or this isn’t gonna end well. Well it will for us because that game is gonna be awesome, but not for CDPR

That's so unnecessary. Do none of these companies look at Nintendo or Blizzard (Free HK disclaimer)?
Take fricking forever to finish your game, but release a fricking masterpiece.

Blizzard has been fricking up quite a bit since Activision bought them over a decade ago. They also just shitted out a remaster to one of their most beloved games, put about zero effort into it.

Can't wait for the game though.. 51 days away boys!

Their job is to develop a video game..it's not like they're out there saving lives. Why even give a frick?

Depends on how bad the crunch is. If it's like a normal tax or audit season for a CPA, I have zero pity.

They better be careful or Keanu will pull out

Yea if it’s a stretch of 60-65 hour weeks no big deal

they're getting paid for the OT, so who cares. ive never understood the crunch hatred for devs that pay OT. you dont' like it? go work somewhere else. pretty simple
unpaid OT crunch is pretty shitty but I don't think thats the norm. in any industry with megaprojects, there will be a crunch. no matter how hard you try to frontload your time and effort, it always seems like there are a million things to do at the end. it'll never stop.

I'm just guessing, but maybe they're trying to get it out this year for financial reasons.

Breaking! Big business in crunch time in prep for project release!
^ the fact that this statement is in the news and presented as a problem.....is a problem.
Work ethic is dying. As long as they are paid then no problem.

Eh, the game industry has been notoriously bad about this for a long, long time. It's to the point that the issue scares away a lot of potential new employees due to how ridiculous it can get depending on the company. Pulling some extra hours for a little while, yeah sure whatever. As long as they're being compensated accordingly. There have been cases where that is just the norm at companies however, and it results in burnt out employees and shitty results.
Imagine just pulling 60-80 hour weeks, and not for a month or so, but every year of your life. That is what CDPR was trying to avoid, but sounds like it caught up to them. Hopefully they return to a normal after this.

I've had a few 80 hour work weeks this year in order to get a project launched and being salary on top of that is pretty shitty but my managers are usually willing to give some comp time.

It's not endemic to the video game's industry like the gaming media would have you believe, and I do agree that it's largely unavoidable.
When someone finds a better way, they'll make a lot of money.

And some respond by "selling" the beta versions as "Early Access", which has worked to a degree for smaller indies.
The big boys have moved to loot boxes/pay to win and/or an endless stream of DLC - I'm all for extra content, but that seems to excuse/reward them for setting too ambitious a time table, failing to meet that, and just say, "frick it - we'll fix it with patches or DLC".
And the publishers would so badly like to get us all on a subscription plan like the video streaming services do, but they haven't quite cracked that code yet.
To the OP's point - video games have always been made like this, though, just to varying degrees of intensity.

These people could always go find a job elsewhere.

Are the workers complaining?
I've only seen Jason "muh unionz" Schrier crying about it.

Good question. He cries about everything too.
