That was one of my beefs with Odyssey. I wasn't a fan of the hack and slash battles. That said, I'm still going to play Valhalla. I'm too much of a sucker for large open world games.

Yep. I haven't played an AC game since Black Flag. I loved the pirate theme. Wish they'd come out with more pirate games honestly.
Valhalla looks awesome though. I'll probably pick this up

I just picked this up for $9 during a PlayStation Store sale. I've never played an AC game. Does the backstory from AC 1-3 matter?

No, although some little references you won’t get. You’re not missing anything.
Black Flag is fun except for all the tailing missions. There’s a lot of them. But exploring the Caribbean is fun and when you beef up your ship, hammering away at Man o’ Wars and pirate hunter ships is addictive.
