The last I'd heard was that the release of Classic had doubled the existing sub count for BFA. So I'm going to assume roughly 2.5 mil.

I'm midway through watching it, and I am impressed. I stopped playing WOW many years ago (started playing upon its release and put in about 6 years before quitting), and this looks compelling enough to get me back into the MMO gaming

I haven't seen any MMORPG's pushing the limits like this since EQ:N (which died before getting their world-builder AI into Landmark).

The node system is pretty interesting by itself. Electing a Mayor, different types of cities, different architecture, quests based on node level and location, geographic balance to keep every node from maxxing, PVP to bring down nodes so nearby nodes can rise... that alone is damned impressive.

The PVP anti-griefing/Corruption system is fricking inspired.

Instanced raids can be up to 40 players.

About the only thing missing from this is the world being constructed of voxels.

Any game that allows me to ride an Otter in to battle gets my vote.

I'm hoping it gets me back also because it's by far my favorite genre.

I'm extremely optimistic about the project after watching the interview with the creative director/ guy who funded it.

This was the only thread I could find on this so sorry if there was another. I'm contemplating coming out of gaming retirement for this thing. Been gobbling up every bit of info I can find about it over the last few months.

The Alpha one test for it was scheduled for June 1st but just got pushed back to July. Probably because Activision just announced TBC Classic will launch on June 1st which probably isn't a coincidence and if it's not, that's a great sign.

Combat is gonna be tab-targeting with the holy trinity group dynamic of tank/healer/dps that should be familiar to anyone that has played MMORPGs. 8 Man parties, 16/40 man raids and 250 man sieges.

The politics, trade and crafting parts of this game are going to be on somewhat on par with EVE Online (watch a few videos on eve if you want an idea of the epic scope of player driven content they are going for with this game). That would be awful for the casual gamer but they are designing AoC to still make room for casual players which is EVE's cardinal sin.

It will be much more forgiving and the sieges on nodes will only be available from 3-7pm meaning you don't have to be the sweatiest of nerds to actually be a part of the epic battles that will take place.

That and the anti-griefing system will make it a game that can actually maintain a population of people just wanting to get on a couple of times a week to have fun and still provide the crazy amount of depth that the 20 hour a day gamers need to give the game life.

This isn't a WoW killer. WoW is already dead and the marketing and analytics people that run Activision are just humping every last dollar they can out of it while it fades into maintenance mode. It will always have it's place in the MMO world.

AoC has a good chance to be what WoW WAS. A game that came along and changed the whole landscape. It's still around 2 years out and there is still PLENTY that can go wrong at this point in development but they have the marketing, team, money and design philosophy to make it happen.

You can play the Alpha...... if you have 500 bucks

I think you and I are the only EQ vets left on here, this looks very interesting. I will keep an eye on it, I am currently in an other than gaming phase, but who knows when it comes out.

For people who want to see some gameplay footage and get a better feel for what they are going for with the game the second phase of the Alpha test is July 9-11th and it has no NDA on it so streamers/youtubers will be able to publish it's content.

If you watch, keep in mind that this is only the second public test of any kind for the game and it is by no means even close to a finished product. It's pretty bold of them to be this transparent at this point in the development process. Most AAA MMO's don't lift the NDA until they are well into the Beta testing phase.

The amount of transparency in AoC's development is an excellent sign that they respect their customers and truly intend to deliver a good product. Pretty refreshing after seeing the "create the problem, sell the fix" mentality that exists in the market right now.
