Houston is a good food city, but the amount of people putting it top 5 in this thread is hilarious.

The way I see it, Houston has variety, but little stand out quality. Comparing Houston to a lot of these cities is like comparing a really good casino buffet to a world class restaurant specializing in a single style of cuisine.

It's definitely the most diverse scene in Texas and probably the south.

Friend,
It never ceases to amaze me how sensitive Chicago dwellers are about their city’s food reputation. I have probably eaten in 250 restaurants in Chicago over the years. There is no question that the pizza places I listed are famed. Tourist trap or not, those are the places that helped put Chicago on the map for pizza. Unfortunately, a good slice of pizza is next to impossible to find there — one may just as well give up and go with Domino’s, as it is better than all of Chicago’s deep dish eateries. The one place in Chicago that might survive in Brooklyn is Piece, which does produce a good pie.
Now that Mariposa is closed I have no real reason to eat in Chicago again. Hot Doug’s is now closed too, but its dogs were stomach turning. Sure, Alinea was impressive, but mostly for its novelty. There are now just three restaurants I would recommend: Purple Pig, Portillo, and Sun Wah. That’s not a very good endorsement for a city with ten million.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Houston, per capita, is meh

Blackbird in Chicago is one of the best meals I’ve ever had.
Unfortunately, Covid got them.

There are plenty of good places to eat in Austin and it’s a pretty big “scene” these days but I don’t think there’s a single place that would be considered great on a national level.

Ha, I agree but I didn’t want to open that can of worms ( see thread below)

I'm surprised by the lack of Los Angeles on a lot of y'all's lists, especially when you factor in ethnic foods and fusions.
Posted on 7/21/20 at 10:24 pm to TH03
Yeah I wouldn’t put it on a top 5 list either

Austin is a pretty big food ‘scene’ bc it’s liberal and the MSM push it - I’ve never eaten at a place there that should be nationally recognized. But it’s been a while since I’ve been there (hope to keep it that way)

You sure seem angry.
I don’t consider Austin Top 5 either, because that’s an insanely high bar. But Austin has a really great food scene.

This reads like a copypasta.

For places I'm familiar with:
NOLA
Houston
Gulf Coast
Austin
Red Stick
Charleston is so overrated food wise. Most memorable thing there is the cornbread at Edmund's. And yet I really like the town.
ETA: NOLA is the pinnacle of all things seafood culinary. And Houston is now the BBQ capital of the world. That's why they're on mine and should be on yours too.
Finally, Galveston should get some love.

Nope, not angry. Thanks for your concern.
Name a few good places in Austin to eat, please. Maybe it’s changed since I lived there, and since I last visited.
