Quite a few value priced wines on their list. And I'm glad to see Tensley getting some love at #40. I've been a fan of their wines for many years.

I am mad, however, that the 2019 Joel Gott Sauvignon Blanc made the list at #21. I've been drinking that wine all year long, and now it will be sold out at my local store

Plenty of Bodegas on this list. I wonder how much they paid to dominate like that

Is this list legit? Is there really a bunch of top 50 wines for under $30? Also how hard are these to fine at a place like Total Wine?

I've never fully comprehended how WS compiles its list. I assume it's some combination of quality plus value. And while these shouldn't be viewed as the best 100 wines in the world, I'd say that any of the wines on the list are going to be good.

My guess is that you'll be able to find most of them

Just ordered 2 bottles of the 2015 Brunello at #3. Found them online for $60/bottle.

i'm not a huge wine guy so I don't know how well known it is, but I bought Beaux Freres recently and was blown away. I dont see or hear it discussed very often so I was kind of surprised to see it at Number 9 here, but it's definitely high quality stuff.

It's basically a list of decent wines that are easy to find, most of which are at a reasonably affordable price point. There are some pretty good ones on here but also some head-scratchers.

I'm not sure that's WS's approach either. The Tensley, for example, is notoriously difficult to find. There were only 1500 cases made and most bottles either went to Tensley's mailing list customers or to restaruants.

Caiarossa Toscana Pergolaia #28 looks like a great buy. A highly rated Super Tuscan for $28.

Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Reserva #25 as well. $18 for a good Rioja? All day long on that one.

Those two in the top 25 jumped out at me for the quality vs price ratio.

ETA: Vietti Barbera d'Asti Tre Vigne #47 for $18 a bottle. Vietti makes fantastic wines.

A lot of wines are high in price due to rarity, sometimes that makes them better and sometimes that just makes them something only rich people can drink and think they are superior. Seriously. Especially if a small winery is popular or becomes hip.

A lot of your rare and more expensive wines may also be that way because of only one or two small characteristics that make it popular, but overall it may not be a great balanced wine. For example I hate wines with a lot of tannins, but some people love them and there's some very expensive wines with a lot of tannins.

There's plenty of sommeliers out there that tell you there's rarely a reason to spend more then $25 or so.

Given that, I've had some fantastic wines that were $50+. But I also think when you know something is more, it may taste better.

I'm pretty sure the word was out on Joel Gott SB. I only recognize a few of those names pretty funny how little I know about wine.

Overally tannic and acidic wines generally haven't aged enough. Let them sit for a few years. It why I purchase different classes of wines. Some for drinking upon release (like a barbera) and some for aging (like a barolo).

Most people get a good bottle of wine and drink it way too young then wonder why they don't like it.

I'm sure there are a few rarer ones in there, but a lot of the ones on this list are relatively easy finds.

And when does your yearly review come out?

My gosh, it's been such a bizarre year that I completely lost track of how late in the year it is. Plus the fact that I retired in July, so one month is pretty much the same as every other month as this point.

I'll have to start working on that. I keep notes during the year of the wines I like and don't like, so I should be able to have it ready in a few days.

I would refer to l.a. and his comment about value being a possible consideration.

From the list:

quote:

Each year, Wine Spectator editors survey the wines reviewed over the previous 12 months and select our Top 100, based on quality, value, availability and excitement.

It’s the excitement that I look for.
