Why is "Medium Well" frowned upon?

Last time I ordered a steak, I asked for Medium Well. NY Strip. It's simply the way I like it for texture and taste. However, from the reaction I got from the waiter and my dinner partners, it almost made me feel like a social outcast.
Bottom line: that's the way I like it. It suggests that Rare or Medium-Rare is reserved for the culinary aristocracy, and anything that sits on the grill longer is so... bourgeois.

Because their palates are better than yours and that's not suppose to be how you eat a steak.
I eat it however I damn well please. I like my steak medium to medium well. Boo hoo to the purist.

Eat it the way you like it. Food and beer snobs are the fricking worst.

Medium well done via reverse sear is the only way to eat medium well.

Because some people think the way they like it is the only "proper" way and they want everyone to know it.
I like mine rare to med rare, but if someone wants it well, who am I to say anything about what they like.
I think Angelina Jolie looks like a troll on meth. Some think she looks great.
edit: I also love marshmallows that are caught on fire when you are roasting them.

Then peel the layer. Then catch on fire. And keep repeating.

Which is the accepted way by people with good palates.

you are a person with a good palate. It is your duty to impose shame upon them for a lesser palate.

my MIL always gets a filet cooked well done. i just giggle.
back to your question though, if you order a steak cooked above medium, you are likely getting the leftover cuts that werent sold the day before. the fresh cuts are cooked at the lower temps and the leftover cuts are served to the med-well/well done orders.

However, from the reaction I got from the waiter

Some people can be pretentious about how they like their steaks cooked. I prefer medium rare, but I don't judge someone who orders theirs some other way.

Marinate with soy sauce & yellow mustard
Microwave on high till well done
Smother with ketchup & ranch dressing
Eat with a side of okra tomato gumbo made with jar roux
Chase it down with a Bud Light
Now THAT'S eatin'
It's YOUR food, eat it like the hell you want to

I'll admit it. I silently judge them if they order a steak past medium. I think anybody that cares or knows anything about food would as well.
Doesn't mean I'll be rude or get angry or berate the person, but I'll silently think to myself "ugh what a waste" and go about my dinner.

I don't want or order a steak like that, but I don't care if you do, and will say screw any place where a waiter will "react" in any way to such an order.

I'm about as bourgeois as they come, and I don't like my meat cooked all the way through. I won't knock you for liking what you like, but to say we're snobs for liking pink meat is not true.
