Why are many nicer restaurants shunning the baked potato these days?

I’m sure executive fusion chef Francois le Bayou’s duck confit fingerling curry potatoes are delicious and all but most of the time if I’m ordering a ribeye I want a god damn baked potato. I’m a heterosexual man.

It’s simple to make and should always be an option. Half pounder, salty af, and a quarter stick of butter. I’m eating the skin, too.

Is a baked potato too “common folk” for some of these soy boy chefs?

I’m with you bud. It’s hard to beat a ribeye steak and baked potato. Had that combo at Port of Call before the 2007 sugar bowl vs ND, and it was amazing.

Potatos are my favorite food. I lost almost 40 pounds incorpingorating them into my diet.

Great for you and fill you up with may calories.

A whole pound of potatos is 340 calories.

How do you beat that.

Because they don’t look pretty on the plate. Nice restaurants are just as big on presentation as they are on flavor.

I’m with you though; I love a baked potato

yeah I'm with you there. With a steak I want either a baked potato or basic roasted potatoes.

I went to Sonny Williams in Little Rock late last year and they had a basic baked potato as a side. It was awesome.

Maybe so, but the way most people eat baked potatoes, the calorie count goes off the charts------Butter, Sour Cream, Bacon Bits, Cheese will kick that number up past 1000 in a hurry.

Thats true and I dont eat them that way.
But I find if I roast them will a just a little olive oil to coat the skin. Saltt and Pepper.
They are Delicious.

Yeah, a bland potato is boring, but I've gotten to where a little butter and some garlic salt, generous amounts of pepper and some onion powder give it a pretty good flavor. The butter adds some calories, but sour cream and cheese aren't always necessary if you're concerned about calories.

Probably because it is too basic and it doesn’t take any skill to cook it. Chefs in gourmet restaurants like to show off.

I don't care for baked potato but LA Lagniappe has a very good twice baked potato that comes with the entree.

Is potato preparation style linked to one's sexual proclivities?

Because going to a nicer restaurant, most people expect more than

quote:

Half pounder, salty af, and a quarter stick of butter

Maybe the restaurant thinks people don't want to spend $10 on something they can make at home for $2?

It will be too fancy for you, but Pommes Boulangerie is one of the best potato dishes i've ever made and ate. I highly recommending it if you see it on the menu somewhere, assuming they don't screw it up.

I'm still trying to figure out what are the "nicer restaurants" the OP might be referencing, outside of steakhouses I guess, that would have typically had baked potatoes on the menu and are now "shunning" them -- without even needing to denigrate baked potatoes.

I'm a pretty old guy, and I don't recall ever seeing them on menus anywhere outside of those, or occasionally in more casual seafood/neighborhood type places.

ETA, Plus, don't most "nice" steakhouses still offer them?

Ohio State?

I walked back in the stadium after the game, after three days of drinking real heavy caught up with me and did things in the stall that I don't think I'll ever be forgiven for. I am honestly sorry for the maintenance staff.

That’s could be said about a lot of things on restaurant menus.

You have no idea how fancy I may or may not be, sir.

Nope. That was the 2008 sugar bowl for the 2007 season.

I honestly can't remember the last one i've been to that actually offered a baked potato. To your point though, I think steakhouses would be the only places I could think of that i'd consider "nice" that would have shunned them. They were not a regular staple at nice restaurants where I live.

To that point, they don't really go well with most finer dining since it is a very stand alone item. Plus, they are just kind of boring. Don't get me wrong, they are delicious when done right, but there are better ways to serve potatoes and ways that incorporate into more upscale dishes better.

True, but a baked potato is about as basic as you can get.
