Depends. Carne asada in SoCal is unbeatable as well as fish tacos
I agree with this. Depends on how much you like Mariscos, I still think about shrimp tacos at a place that closed down a decade ago.
Also I prefer breakfast burritos over breakfast tacos.

Texas is tex mex. Cali is more traditional mexican.
There's a time for each.

No disrespect, but if you can’t locate elite food options in Southern California, you’re both a dumbass and a dildo.

I was downvoted for making the hot sauce joke, but there was some truth to it.
There is one poster here who brought hot sauce with him on a trip to Paris. Imagine being in one of the food capitals of the World, but you have to tote hot sauce with you because the food isn't "seasoned" enough for your liking.

Traditional Tex Mex is very influenced by northern Mexico. Basically a derivative. California Mexican has always been more broad.
But it’s hard to beat Tex Mex hallmarks like fajitas and perfectly done cheese enchiladas.
And the landscape has changed a good deal. There’s a lot of solid regional Mexican places in Dallas and Houston now,
Californians will always turn there nose at old school Tex Mex.

In Southern California you get Sonora, Jalisco, and Sinaloa influence in the Mexican restaurants and food.

Both have good Mexican food. So many options on both places it really comes down to individual restaurants.

I would say it is entirely dependent on what you want.
Tacos that arent fish? Texas.
Tortillas? Texas.
Soups? Cali.
Fish? Cali
Seafood? Cali.
Stews? Texas.
But I love that weird crossover in south Texas. You have Cajun, Texas BBQ, Mexican and South American flavors all bouncing off of each other.
I had a birria taco the other day that some dude's ol lady cooked from morgan city. Instead of the broth for dipping, she made a thin crawfish étouffée.
Somewhere around bite #2 I told him to marry that girl. He's mexican, she's a rice booty cajun mullatto. The food potential.
