Let me add that the 3 sazerac picks so far have been very good and unique barrels, especially considering the price point of 18-25.

As the rep told us, they only allowed so many barrels to be sent to LA so they made sure they were great to garner excitement around the new barrel program.

Seems like most of the “players” in the south LA bourbon world have gotten a Saz pick. Looking forward to trying my local stores pick

When did you pick yours up? I cleaned them out of that batch the weekend before thanksgiving...

A lot are half barrel I am told.

They were told the first run would be 10-20 barrels...we shall see.

I know of at least one nola restaurant that is on a buying freeze and passed. One of the grocery stores (or 2) got it. There may be severe more restaurant/bars that passed given the tough times.

Hey that’s great info. The barrel pick program has been a mystery to me, so this helps a lot. I’m not in Nola much anymore, but I do need to get to Elios. Knowing their taster is solid is enough to get me to try some of their picks.

Really I will be happy with any of them as I am not a distinguished palate. I either like something or I don’t. While I can taste that two bottles are different, I can’t tell you why or what specifically I taste. For me it’s nice to get those bottles that are just different enough to make it a new experience

I should also say that bourbon fest and Martin's do a great job of picking barrels, along with maisano's and lincoln road.

I must have hit it right before too. I got 6 four roses and 14 Russell's reserve picks.

I have sampled 50 or more picks of RR between bottled store picks and picking barrels with Eddie. Give me that polly pick all day. She did it with jimmy and eddie. its absurdly good.

Just drive to Mississippi for 4 Rose's picks. We get 1-3 barrels a year. MS gets much, much more. The reasons are stupid and not worth going into. Just drive to Jackson, Hattiesburg, or the Coast

Isn't a lot of the pick what the distillery gives you? Most of the time aren't you picking from 3 choices selected by the distillery?

With Buffalo Trace/Saz Corp, yes. You can send back and get 3 more samples though.

I have sat in on many barrel picks. Wild Turkey and Makers Mark are by far the best in numerous samples/constructing the whiskey you want.

Picking with Eddie is the most fun though.

My favorite story though:

I helped jamie pick an impromptu barrel at Lincoln Road with my wife waiting in the car (I had coaxed her on the drive with promises of a good antique shop and good bbq at Leathas). I told her I would just be second since I was picking up pre-purchased bottles (wine and whiskey), which was honestly what I thought was going to happen. I rolled up 30-45 minutes later and said, get out; you are driving us to lunch.

Any good stores on the coast? I only know of liquor barrel in bay st louis, and they only have an Old Forester pick currently. I'm in the area a lot, but I don't know any of the more reputable stores out here.

Saz & Trace rouses picks went out to just about every store, FYI. Don’t have to be in Nola. Several got EAgle rare too

Had both Saz & BT at Tchoup earlier in the week, & that’s one of their mid tier program stores

Just won a bottle in my local liquor store holiday raffle

Choice between 1792 Full Proof or Smoke Wagon Uncut.
I’m more of a scotch drinker than bourbon but I’ve heard good things about both of these.

What’s the consensus here on which is better?

Today was a good day! $20 / $54 / $80. The BT is a Rouses Barrel pick. Couldn’t pass it up for $20. The Russels is Martin’s Barrel pick. Do yourself a favor and get this bottle. It’s a flavor bomb. The MW needs no explanation. I’ll be having a pour of each in just a little bit.
