Barrel pick question:

Who do you trust for picking out barrels? I live Northshore, and there are Russels picks at Acquistipace, Total Wine and Saias. Is this one of those can't go wrong scenerios by purchasing at any of those (I won't buy TW, because I want to support my local stores), or is it wiser to trust one more than the others? I've been wanting to grab one of those Russel picks, but at $60 I only plan to buy one. I'm curious how you all decide whom to trust if that does indeed matter.

Can't speak for the Russel's pick, but Aquistapace's Elijah Craig pick is delicious and only $23.

I saw Saia has a Sazerac Rye store pick. Curious about that one, probably will grab a bottle tomorrow.

Picked me up that EC tonight actually. That and this 1PD of Old Soul from MS. I asked the bourbon guy there if the russels was a distiller pick or store, and he said distiller. The Sazarac is the same. He pointed out the ones that Adam personally tasted and selected, and the EC, Pinhook and Old Soul were the ones. I already had the pinhook ones so grabbed the EC and OS.

Neck pour on OS is actually pretty good. I was skeptical (it’s MGP then finished in their own barrels in Jacksonville), but I actually do like it. Not my favorite, but definitely good stuff.

Glad to know more of how this works. Basically Saias gets the distiller picks and not their own personal selections. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s certainly reason to grab the Aqcuistipace ones. Adam is very good at this.

BR bourbon society did a pick with that Old Soul and I was surprised how good it was. It was a winner for sure

Yep, the Martin’s guy told me when I grabbed it off the shelf...he was right.

Although this bottle doesn’t ever disappoint honestly

Adam is a wine guy. He is not involved in the whiskey picking. It's just what the store tells people. He outsources to several guys I know, but because Adam deals in volume he often just tells the distiller to pick a barrel to expedite the process. It's the exact same story at elios. Tim only drinks wine. With that said, Tim's guys that pick it are better than Adam's (or at least align better with my tastes).

Saias, total wine, and rouses just say yes to distillery picks. Doesn't mean the pick is bad, but they get that barrel and they work hard to push it out the door.

With that said, no one got to pick the sazerac barrels. This is a trial run at a larger barrel program for the rye. A streamlined test run...you either said yes or no to the barrel. I hope in the future that stores are allowed to sample and pick the barrels of sazerac.

I was told today that we are approved for another barrel next year too. I dont know if I can pick it though.
