A friend has been boasting about Kenney seafood in Slidell.
I haven't been there but the menu prices are not that bad. He says the seafood is great.

The hot food bar at Whole Foods is ridiculously overpriced.

Agree. But you can get some grits for $2. I went to Rouses hot bar for cheese grits and it goes by weight, so it rung up for close to $8 for damn grits. Passed.

That reminds me of the literal greatest deal ever. Lakeview Grocery used to offer bacon on the breakfast buffet by weight. You could fill one of those styrofoam carryout containers for $1-2. They wised up after a while and now pre-package the bacon 4 slices for $1.99. People used to roll out of there with 3-4 of those boxes full of bacon for under $10.

The weight things only work out well for some foods. I used to load up on fried catfish at the store by my old house for like $5.

I go to a store for lunch quite a bit that has the food out like that. Usually two or three fried things, a few meats, pasta, sides, etc and it goes by weight. I usually get out for around $5-$6. Pretty good food too.

Pro tip, remove all the dead flies from the box before weighing it.

I actually went to WF right as the lunch food got put out the other day and it looked awesome.

I hate weighted places because I'm rarely going for the expensive items. Salad Station, for example, doesn't have a base price for a salad with protein vs. one without. I paid more for a salad with no meat than my mom did with a pile of chicken on hers.

El Gato Negro was expensive for what it is as well

No free unlimited chips and salsa

$21 for chicken fajitas. Mexican place here in harahan is $14.50 and the same

However, I do think there is a bubble of some sorts. Not that it will all come crashing down, but I think BR food prices are above what most people are willing to pay for them. That is why I think we see so many closures of average places. I think there is a place in the market primed to be taken advantage of. A place like Lit Pizza comes in here with good pizzas, almost big enough for multiple servings, unlimited toppings for $8... Place is always packed and expanding like crazy.

People in Baton Rouge eat out a lot and really aren’t to concerned about price, or I should say are willing to pay but average is on every corner. You sell average you should charge average. If it’s crap and it’s overpriced you don’t last any longer in BR than you do in NO. We are by and large an educated and wanting group of diners and being as close to New Orleans as we are that helps, since so many of us frequent there as well.

Places I enjoy and think I get a good return on my money are Nino’s, La Lagniappe, DiGuilios, Zorbas, French Market Bistro and if I just stick to a salad and a pasta Ruffinos can be right in there. There are others too, just a few I frequent.

I think part of it is what is reasonably expected on both sides. I want good service, good food and a nice couple of wines at a good price point which the ones I’ve listed I feel comfortable with. In return I’m not a difficult diner, I understand maybe being out of something or kitchen a bit backed up and as long as I’m kept aware I’m normally ok and I understand what that server is doing and I tip well but I also treat them well and with respect. If I bring a wine and it’s unusual I’ll offer the server a taste which they greatly appreciate.

I go out to dinner because I enjoy it and I enjoy being with family and friends and being leisurely. I want to have a good time, good conversation, good wine and forget about the problems we all have. I tend not to complain, not that I haven’t but I’m a lot easier to deal with if for no other reason than I don’t want to spoil my mood.

I’ve certainly come out of restaurants and said well that wasn’t good or wine to expensive (like I’m not paying $90 for Prisoner) or service sucked or yes it was too expensive, but I just chalk it up, scratch them off for the most part and move on. Life’s too short to get pissed about the cost of a hamburger.
