In Anne Kearney's prime? Certainly. Best restaurant in the history of the city.

Ate at Wolfe's place in Pass Christian pretty regularly.... i liked going there b/c he would always make his way around the place a couple times a night. shite, one night we were there a little late and he came out and visited with us. There were only a few tables left, he had a glass of wine and sent out the whole desert menu on the house to us. Dude, had me hooked from then on out

I can't tell you how good it was. The roasted squab with dirty rice and foie gras. The appetizer of roasted beet and crabmeat salad with a broken beet viniagrette. Great service and a Clancy's priced wine list.

Come back Anne, we miss you.

I don't think Michelin three star dining is something people in NO are particularly interested in supporting (I don't really enjoy or seek it out either FWIW), and I think the restaurant scene probably reflects that. I don't think that kind of dining is consistent with the culture. If you look at the three star places in NYC, they aren't the kind of places people are going to visit regularly. NO, and LA in general, seem to prefer more relaxed dining experiences without a lot of the stuff that Michelin values.

Seems like Stella was trying really hard to be this -- I would argue, to their detriment. I think the original conception of Le Foret, as well. Neither are really on the typical local's radar, so you probably make a good point.

I think Revolution was originally striving for this level. They have clearly missed the mark but they tried.

I've never tried La Foret, is it really that good?

I'd say worthy of stars:

August
Gautreau's
Lilette
Le Foret
Stella

Agree. And, yeah, Peristyle was great when Anne ran the kitchen. Bummer. She should come back to town.

And Y.A.'s point about Stella! (first time I've used the stupid exclamation point ) and Le Foret is well taken. That level of formality that Michelin seems to like is, frankly, a bit of a turn off to me. It just seems stuffy for my taste. I like great cuisine with a tad more relaxed approach.
