What's the reasoning behind leaving out entire cities? Especially cities known for excellent dining options.

I think it's just limited resources on the part of Michelin.

Now I'm not so sure about the Vegas thing. I'm trying to research whether Vegas restaurants qualify for Michelin star ratings, and it looks like they do. Perhaps they didn't in the past.

I haven't been to a restaurant that deserves one, IMO. August would be the closest.

Agreed, but I'd give them one. Their operation is air tight from service to food to presentation to wine selection.

I've eaten at a single Two Star Michelin in Paris (which had been at one time a 3 Star) that was decidedly on a "whole nother level" than anything I've seen in New Orleans. I've eaten at a couple of one stars in New York that were not markedly on another level from some places in New Orleans. Although, I'm not arguing there are more than 1 or 2 legitimate One Stars here. Just that there are a small handful of places that basically approximate them.

I was trying to find anything to back my claim about Vegas Michelin star rating, and apparently both Los Angeles and Las Vegas were "temporarily" suspended in 2010.

LINK

Then I stumbled on this from later last year...

LINK

quote:

In order to receive a star, you have to be, most importantly, in an area that is covered by Michelin. I could start a place that rivals the French Laundry in Dallas and would never get one - Dallas is, currently, not covered by Michelin. In America, this would be New York City, the Silicon Valley, San Francisco, East Bay and Wine Country, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas. You will notice that no southern cities are included. America is special, in this case, in that Michelin guides are written per city or (in the case of San Francisco) small area, not state or country as they are elsewhere.

Maybe we should join Al Bundy in hating the French.

I ate at two 1* places in San Francisco. One was more exceptional than the other, but both were incredible with top notch service- as in some of the best I've ever had.

Not really based solely upon cooking skills of an individual chef.

They're basically rating the chef, though. Of course it's the chef basically as overseer of everything g

That's the kicker. Although it has some merit and I've eaten a few Michelin rated restaurants, I'm not overly persuaded by Michelin ratings (of course, I'm originally from northwest Louisiana so what do I know ).

ETA: See, I think much of it is a stylistic issue.

Murell's was at least two stars in its heyday.

Unless Joe Impastato ups his advertising budget in that given month. Then he may win out.
