Do they have to have a prix fixe menu to be considered?

Ehh, there would be a lot that would get 1 or 2 stars. Judging from spots that have 1 or 2 in other cities.

In fact, I'd even say if Michelin ever did a New Orleans issue (which they wont so this is a moot point), they'd fine at least a handful of spots award with three stars.

They arent going to go to the expense of judging places if they cant find at least one place "worth a special visit". I'll say that a meal I had in Paris at a well-known chef's spot was every bit as perfect as one in Spain. The one in Spain had 3, the one in Paris 2. Its all a bunch of horseshite.

You should use the birdie, par, and bogey system.

I feel like most major cities would have one place with at least 1 star.

This is not an invalid point. My hypo wasn't really assuming they were going to do a N.O. edition, though. Just which one would fall under their ratings assuming, say, they decided to rate all of the U.S.

While I agree, there's some political BS that goes into their star system, I still don't think, working under my assumption, New Orleans has any place they'd consider Three Star.

Maybe a tad ambitious.

I'd say worthy of stars:

August
Gautreau's
Lilette
Le Foret
Stella

I do like the golf reference.

You are judging it against other cities, which isnt quite the exact way Michelin works. Again this is a stupid argument, Michelin isnt coming to New Orleans, but if they did, they'd find at least 2 spots deserving 3 stars.

And to be honest if you hit August or Stella on the right day, they get fairly close to "deserving of three stars".

And I think they would.

I think we'd have at least 20-30 spots deserving of at least 1 star. Of that subset, at least 5 or so could get 2. And of that two star subset, one or two (again on the right night) could hit a Michelin 3 Star mark.

My ex was in NYC this week for the US Open. Said that Jean George was crap compared to Gautreau's.

I had one of the worst meals of my life at Daniel. And that had three stars at the time (4 from NYT, which has since demoted it). Fact is, the inspector judges it against a set of criteria and based on personal feelings. Since it is a subjective process, the possibility exists the inspector would find 1-2 places which are 3 stars.

New Orleans is a city of what, 300,000 thousand people? And we aren't in France, like Lyon. We eat well, we cook well and we love eating out.

I stand by my assessment, we have atleast 4 or 5 worth 1 star.

I think 4-5 one stars is a low assessment. Call me a homer, but our dining scene is fairly fantastic for a city that is really just a large town. Just look an hour west for an example of a place with similar metrics and a less impressive restaurant scene.

Lyon only has 1 actually, Paul Bocuse.

One 3 star? I didn't say NOLA would have that.

My opinion is that Gautreau's is the best restaurant in town, and has been the most consistent for almost 20 years. Stella, August and Lilette are all worthy of a star IMO.

BO, can opine on the others.

I think this is about right. I don't think Michelin three star dining is something people in NO are particularly interested in supporting (I don't really enjoy or seek it out either FWIW), and I think the restaurant scene probably reflects that. I don't think that kind of dining is consistent with the culture. If you look at the three star places in NYC, they aren't the kind of places people are going to visit regularly. NO, and LA in general, seem to prefer more relaxed dining experiences without a lot of the stuff that Michelin values.

I've only been to one that was rated. Was rated 1star, was terrapin creek in bodega bay, ca (sonoma cty). The food was retarded delicious... but, to say it was that much better than August and or Cochon would be hard to determine.
