If you want set and forget, get a rec teq. If you want more involvement with smoking and grilling, start with a weber kettle and progress from there.

You mentioned "entertaining", so I assume if you're more interested in communal part, rec teq is the way to go.

Bought a Weber gas grill from Costco. Bought my Mak 2 Star General directly from Mak. If you buy a pellet grill at least got USA made.

I use a 22 inch Weber Kettle. I’m not cooking two briskets or anything like that. Plenty of room to cook for 10 or so.

Weber for either gas or charcoal.

If you want to move into higher grill arts then maybe a ceramic cooker such as Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, or Primo would be something to look into

Do you want to grill or smoke? If you want to do both do you want one unit or two?

I have a Pitts and Spitts. 850. All stainless. It was expensive but worth it to me. And I wanted something made in the USA (made in their fab shop in Houston).

If outdoor cooking isn't an actual hobby, then get a high quality gas grill, not charcoal or anything that burns something other than gas. You won't like it.

You're going to want convenience, comfort and low mess.

Get a weber, napoleon or broil king. 3 burner minimum.

You'll get alot of recommendations for komados, pellet grills and various other charcoal/wood smokers or grills.

Unless you're an avid outdoor chef, stay away from those. They're hot, messy, and inconvenient.

It does take some time to learn how to cook on charcoal/wood burning grill or smoker...but depending on what you are cooking, its not THAT time consuming to learn and taste so much better.
I learned to cook burgers, steaks, chicken, porkchops.. things that take less than an hour.. on a Weber Kettle very quickly. it just knowing indirect vs direct heat. Smoking ribs, briskets and butts and such is much more of learning curve and more of hobby as you were saying.

Buccee's actually has some really nice looking offset smokers for around $500 (dont have one, but looks like they are pretty well built with ~0.5" steel, not that flimsy shite you see in the outdoor section at most big box hardware stores today)

Do you have any interest in learning how to grill or smoke with wood or charcoal or do you want the easiest to cook on?

I love my Weber Kettle but I just checked out the Rec-Tec site and that bullseye looks pretty freaking sweet. It would be a lot easier to cook with that than a Kettle if you don't want to really dive in.

I have some pretty good shite bought from lowes, all on clearance over the years.

Two weber WSM's for 160 bucks each a few months ago.

One Oklahoma Joe Barrel smoker for about 120 bucks a year or so ago.

A weber performer kettle, for 130 bucks about a month ago.

And a Weber 4 burner gasser about 3 years ago for around 350.00

Always keep an eye on Lowes.
