What's the shelf life of your cooking oil?

My canola, peanut or corn oil seems to start getting rancid after about 3-4 months. I don't use a lot of oil so I keep getting smaller containers to avoid throwing it away.

Is there a type of oil with a longer shelf life?

I didn't know this could happen. You serious? I thought it was shelf stable for eternity

Are you straining it after using? I haven't had that problem... I don't use a lot either.

4 mos tops in my home kitchen unless I refrigerate it. At the camp where it’s hotter inside, less than that. Sucks because if I’m going to deep fry I have to go get oil. I’m buying smaller quantities and keeping it in fridge

People say olive oil goes bad pretty fast, but IDK.

I used to think this too, but when I go to use it in a recipe (infrequently) it will start to smell rancid. I'm talking even unopened oil which may have been in the pantry for a year, not previously used fry oil. Same thing with nuts or nut oils- walnuts, walnut oil, peanut butter etc. I now keep nuts in the freezer to prevent this. I go through EVOO a lot so I don't have that problem with it, but I hardly use cooking oil so it sits a long time and goes bad- same with Crisco.

I've had a problem with that, too, so now I'm giving avocado oil a try. So far, so good.

Same exact experience. Pecans are especially sensitive to it. Keep for years in freezer though.

I've never had it long enough to find out when it applies to fresh, unused oil.

I do re-use my peanut oil I use to fry turkeys and generally buy a fresh container to fry birds for Thanksgiving and will keep it to use again in the spring between Easter and the start of summer. Then I will bring it to a service station that recycles oil that they let me dump it in the underground tank.

If I fry chicken or fish/shrimp, I will strain the oil clean and use it to make roux.

I use the fish/shrimp based roux for seafood dishes and the roux made from frying chicken to make my chicken/andouille gumbos, brown gravies for roasts, etc.

Freeze it. Strain it well and drop it in your freezer. Itll last a couple years. Biggest thing that makes oil go rancid is warm temps and temp swings. Keep it below 32* and itll stay good for a while.

I've got news for you. They're rancid when you buy them.

Most of us were talking about unused oil.

I’ve used the same oil for like 4 years I just strain it and add a little fresh oil to replenish what I lose

I will try avacado oil next. Plus I may start keeping my cooking oil in the fridge although I don’t have the space. Does avocado oil have any flavor or smells. I really need a neutral oil that I can sauté with or use with salad dressings or recipes (when not using EVOO) like stir fry

i heard it goes bad, but i dont think its that quick. Many wholesalers and retailers store pallets of this stuff for 12-15 weeks before its even on the shelf.

I've been buying avocado oil at Costco for years, no taste or odor, very high flash point. I rarely deep fry so I don't use much oil.
