I ate that all the time with my grandparents in Indiana, but nobody in the south seems to have eaten it. Northern biscuits and gravy? I bet some dude in your family was Navy back in the day, too.

Oriental Beef and Ramen Toss
Cheap, fast and good!
1 lb ground beef
2 pkgs oriental flavor ramen noodles
2 cups water
2 cups frozen oriental vegetable mixture
1/8 tsp ground ginger
2 Tbs thinly sliced green onions
Brown beef and drain. Season with one of the seasoning packs. Set aside.
Put other ingredients, except green onions, into the skillet. Cook until vegetables are done.
Return beef to skillet, add green onion and serve.

A box of mac and cheese was less than a dollar and very filling.
And Totinos $1 pizzas were pretty much everyone's "struggle" meals.

My Haitian roommate had a bitchin recipe for discarded dog we would scavenge from the animal research facility.
Wasn’t gamey at all, but it was a little ruff.

One of the only benefits of working a full time job and putting myself through college. I was a man amongst boys when it came to food since I actually had money
My girlfriend at the time, now wife, had it made too. I'd go into town and we would go to lunch somewhere and then I'd take her to Walmart to stock up for the week. We were eating steak while her roommates were eating easy mac. (Yes, I occasionally cooked for everyone as well)

At LSU in the 2000s, the CEBA Shack had five Pizza Hut breadsticks for two bucks and I would eat them for lunch every day. They were so good and worth every penny of two bucks.
This.
We ate the shite out of them while in school.

College days…
Totinos, canned ham spread, cheap spaghetti sauce.
Value menus were actually a dollar or less so you could get a full meal for $4 or $5. Not the healthiest options to be sure.
