Best beer Abita ever made was the Naughty Quaker Oatmeal Stout. You could only find it on draft an not many bars carried it apparently. I found it at the Avenue Pub on St. Charles. Haven't seen it again in years. Abita Strawberry with boiled crawfish and crabs is a staple. The Alphagator isn't bad. Turbo dog is ok.
I find most Abita beers have the same aftertaste. A Homebrewer who happened to live in Abita Springs told me that the springwater there isn't actually ideal for beer making. Maybe he's right and that is what I taste in the finish of their beer
ETA Abita's Macchiato Espresso Stout might be their best offering you can pickup at the store.

They have an experimental brewer, Don, who makes really good IPA, Hazies, Stouts, etc., but they only are available in the tap room, which is a shame. This is coming from someone who spends way too much money trading beers throughout the country.
Abita Amber and Purple Haze are staples and I'm not sure you can find a better crawfish beer than a very cold Abita strawberry.
I've also found that Abita Hop 99 Light IPA is a great day drinker as you can taste the hops and also pound them without passing out on your face.
All that said, the anniversary Vanilla DoubleDog is the best beer they have ever made and leadership is adamant that they will never brew it again. I do not understand why, but it is what it is.

That's interesting because I recall that being one of their first big "selling points" when they started out.

He claimed the water was too hard. Abita has always claimed to take the water straight from the well and use it to make their beer without filtering it. You're right, they make it their big selling point.

This was exactly the case with me. It kept me from trying IPAs for a long time.
That was before the craft beer market exploded and having countless excellent options available
Abita is what it is. They were all we had in Louisiana for a long time. unfortunately for them, they got passed up by much better (but mostly smaller) breweries quite a while ago

Convington suffered from the same thing Bayou Teche suffered from for a long time. The bottled beers had a fairly heavy metallic aftertaste to them.
This was when BT was having their beers bottled by Lazy Magnolia. Once they started doing all their bottling in-house, that problem went away.
Did Covington maybe contract their bottling out as well?

Also, if you are ever in Abita Springs LA, go visit their facility. They use to give out free samples of their classic brews, plus samples of their upcoming brews. I realize that this may not be possible now with the Covid BS, but, maybe after all the restrictions are lifted.
