I've become a big fan of Tony Mandina's Red Gravy.

I like using Rao's Marinara instead of tomato sauce when making spaghetti. I add fresh vegetable ingredients and spices. It's an excellent sauce. I also like the Rao's Eggplant sauce.

I never use jarred sauces mainly because I like to control the seasonings and quickie sauces are easy to make, but I'm not against them. I don't think I've tried one since Ragu days of old. Jarred sauces are pretty easy to make your own, also, though.

I've never heard of RAO. Is it sweet?

What about Tony Mandina's Red Gravy. Sweet?

It's on the sweet side, but not overly sweet. We use the Tomato Basil one, so the basil adds some extra sweetness, but it mostly just cuts through the acidity.

It's a well balanced sauce. It's about $7-$8 a jar.

I don't find the marinara to be overly sweet at all.. They also have a couple of cookbooks that are good and the recipe for their broccoli rabe is a game changer.
Rao's is an old Italian restaurant up in Harlem that has like 12 tables and you purchase a table for a year. The only way to get in is if somebody gives you their table for a night or somebody dies. I'd really like to make it their sometime. I've read you can go in and have drinks at the bar and wait it out, and if you're lucky they'll seat you. I have one well connected Italian friend in New York that's been and he says it was excellent.
There's also a restaurant in Las Vegas and I don't know if the quality is the same..

That's so interesting! If I see a jar, I'll try it just to taste it, at least. Neat story.

It's definitely worth a try. I've seen Rao's at some Wal Marts, and they have a nice selection at Fresh Market. The eggplant sauce, with your own vegetable season medley and some ground beef is an excellent meat sauce.

Usually $8. But every now and then you can find Rao's on sale for $5-6 and stock up.

Raos basil. Any of the Raos flavors are really good and only have 4 or 5 all natural ingredients.

It is mildly sweet but not over the top. Their sauce tends to have a deeper flavor like a heavily cooked and caramelized tomato flavor. It is also a very smooth sauce, which I've come back to enjoy.

I disagree. It has no added sugar and is more balanced than most sauces.

Silver palate marinara is the best imo

I've never tried the marinara but their tomato basil is my go to. It's often sold out at my HEB though. Looks like I'll have to try Rao's next time though.

For all those sayin “mildly sweet” or “not too sweet” dont quite understand... those of us that do not want sugar even listed on the ingredients.... when someone asks if its “sweet” - that means anything remotely close to appearing there may be a grain of sugar in it.

Hate Im that way, but my meal is ruined if a catch a “hint” of sweet.

Strong and bold for me. Sketti or pizza or creole sauces. Watery is better than sweet for some of us. Is what it is.
