Do you spend a lot of time brushing, cleaning, burning it off? Does it matter?

Get it hot. Hit it with the wire brush.

This is what I do.

High heat until there is no smoke, wire brush, then wipe with an oiled paper towel using tongs.

My family stopped using wire brushes after a family member got a bristle lodged in their throat. A quick use of the google machine says it's not that uncommon, the bristles can break off and stick to the grate, ultimately being transferred to the food. I dunno how common it is, but now they use aluminum foil.

So there's your random factoid of the day, you all know me a little bit better now.

Wire brush is not advisable. If any bristles break loose and stick to the grate and then your foods, swallowing one can mean emergency surgery.

Loosely balled up aluminum foil so there are many angled flat edges works well to scrape and leaves no bristles.

Coater, our FBD ENT with ER experience with this, has advised me against wire brushes, but I still use them.

I do it before each grilling. They stay in their natural state between grillings.

Yeah I don’t use them anymore after removing several from people

I’ve got a wooden paddle looking thing that develops grooves by rubbing it over hot grates. It works great

My go-to way of cleaning them between deep cleanings.

I'll deep clean my grill 3-4 times a year by taking it apart and hitting it with my pressure washer for the crud that collects in the bottom and deep clean the grates.

I'll remove the gas burners and all other components and soak them in hot water with TSP to cut the grease and clean them. Then put everything back together and fire it up and oil my grates to season them.

Damn near good as new.

Stick them in the oven on self clean mode, if there happens to be a run of cold winter days.

Self clean mode is hell for most of the year.

Fire up your grill so the grill is nice and hot, cut an onion in half and use a grill fork or something similar to rub the cut half of the onion all over the grill similar to how you would use a wire brush, works an absolute treat!

I got one of those, but the grate on my new grill/smoker isn't just straight pieces across so it doesn't work worth a shite. I went back to the wire brush even though I've heard your horror stories.

I need to find a better solution.

Combination of heat, brush, and billy bar.

I have cast iron grates on the joe. I usually give it a good scrub while it's cold before i fire up the grill, with a synthetic stiff bristle brush (not wire, for reasons mentioned above. Once it starts getting hot, i'll use the billy bar (pictured below) to scrub in between.

I should probably oil the grates but never have.
