The first time I went to CYP I had a few varieties of bao and some wings... it was ok, nothing special... the second time I went back to try some other wings and bao, and they messed up my order and my lunch break was ruined.
Went to Elsie's the first time, the red beans and rice were spectacular. Thought the fried chicken was just ok and didn't particularly care for the bisque. Pies (Black Forest cream, cherry hand pie) were very good.
Went back and tried the pimento cheeseburger which was great. One of their pot pies - seafood? - was pretty meh. Didn't care for their chocolate cream pie. Overall it was hit and miss, but like I said I know most people love it.

I didn’t include some great restaurants if they were much lower scale/fancy, such as Elsies, Jed’s Local, City Pork which are all great.

Pick a restaurant with an apostrophe and you're gold. If a guy puts his name on the sign out front means the owner is proud of his restaurant and is present and accountable. Right?

This board is so far up its own arse that if you mention a restaurant that they don't think is worthy of a Michelin star or fail to mention one they think deserves one, they have nothing but scorn.
Which is funny because we're talking about BATON ROUGE restaurants.

If you ever decide to go to Chow Yum Phat again, get their Crispy Fish Curry as an entrée. For apps, I'd get the Dan Dan Dumplings and the Crispy Pig Ears. Their Smoked Fried Rice is excellent as well. I personally don't care much for their baos, so I'd say you're better off getting the curry or other options for an entrée.
As for Elsie's, their Chicken Pot Pie is the best thing on the menu imo. For apps, the pimento cheese is fantastic. They also have a really good lemon ice box pie as well. I've had some things I don't like at Elsie's, such as their Smore's Pie and one of their salads (I don't recall the name but it was very vinegary). But overall most of the stuff they have is pretty good. Not top 5 in BR good, but pretty good.

So this, but with an odd twist: an obsession with the oldest names in town. For whatever reason, this board tends to hate any restaurant that isn't either over ten years old or serves cajun/creole fare. With the occasional sushi exception. I just think it's odd as hell

Agree. The Crispy Curry Fish has no business being that good. I get the pho dumplings though. We got both at a group dinner the the pho ones were so amazing, we all wondered why the Dan Dan are the big seller.
I also think the wings that have the Boursin cheese smear are very good. Much better than the other wings on the menu, IMO.
Funny enough, I don’t care for bao or ramen which is kinda what they specialize in.
I hear the birria tacos on Tuesdays are bomb.

brain fart - I meant Chow Yum Phat. The things that stood out - that they recommended to me - were the bao and the wings, and they were just underwhelming.
I also didn't think BLDG5 was all that great, but that was mostly due to all the flies

I don't know when you went, but the flies have been *terrible* this year, everywhere. I don't know if it's because of all the rain or what, but restaurants I've never really dealt with flies before now have swarms if you sit outside.

I think the food at Bldg5 is good, but I will not go there during the summer. I haven’t been in months because of the heat.
The great thing about there is that most of their dishes are vegetables and lean protein so if you’re not wanting to consume 6000 calories, you’re all good. I love when people pick there for weeknight group dinners for that reason.
On topic - Bin77 has impressed me a lot lately. And the live music almost every night is a very nice touch. We’ve been going regularly.
They also own Solera, which is just as solid. We apparently go so much that the bartender came out and greeted us in the parking lot as we were getting out of the car last week They just totally crush it with the food and wine there. The tuna crudo is the best I’ve ever had.

I'd have to suggest Solera on just uniqueness. Not many Spanish restaurants in the area. Im just waiting for the day when I go with a group to order the Paella

I forgot about Bin, but after a bit of a lull where I found their quality dropped off, they are back to rock solid. One of my favorite spots in town to grab a late lunch, though I don’t go as often as I would like because I’m rarely in the area.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a hike for us as well. It was never in the rotation until recently because of that.
I actually think Rouj Creole is also great, but they’ve had some service issues from the beginning. Met some friends there the other night and they closed out after the appetizer came and we went to Bin. I think Rouj has just kinda been stuck with a lot of people who never worked service industry before, which is hard when you are that nicer type of restaurant.
Their HH is legit though. Half off all of their appetizer menu. And they do it all day until 6 on Fridays.
