nteresting. I just figured cities the sizes of BR and NO --regardless of more desired culinary flair--would have a place or two where you went through a line and said I'll have this and that and then point, etc.
We do have places you can do that

Piccadilly, Podnuhs, and other places are exactly like that.

It just isnt common like the mid south area where you have multiple small restaurants that do this

That shite is for old people and podnuhs sucks

Strawns, cotton boll, and Southfield grill in Shreveport all have plate specials every day. Meat, 3 sides, and a roll or cornbread. And they aren't shitty like the cafeteria restaurants

Usually, a meat and 3 you roll up in a line and point to your foods, like a cafeteria....

here is a pic of the meat and 3 the OP referenced

and here is the most famous meat and 3 in nashville

I was so broke in school but once a week I'd get enough money together to go eat.

I am just pointing out, when someone from the mid-south asks for a meat and 3, they are going to expect a cafeteria style setup most likely

If you send them to a plate lunch place like you mentioned, they are going to look at you like you would look at someone who sent you here for gumbo

10-4

Im trying to think of a non-chain traditional style meat and 3 here in Nola

Commerce kinda fits, but the options are kinda small

I would honestly just say go to blue oak for lunch and pick your meat and sides. It is close enough to looking like a meat and 3

Probably not what OP is looking for, but the 4 course meal at the Windsor Court for 20 bucks is delicious and a deal for what you get. It's a protein plus 3 sides and the side options include the gumbo of the day which is very good.

While a lot of meat & 3s in Nashville area have cafeteria lines, that is definitely not a requirement. Many are sit down and order off a menu, especially when it's an old-style daily courier typeface mimeograph-looking insert to the menu...

Ronnie's has a good plate lunch. Ususally stop in on Wednesdays for the pork roast.
