A half a Special and a cup of gumbo from Chris' makes a damn fine lunch. Charley G's gumbo is really delicious too, but dark and rich vs thin. Love them both.

Been there twice with kids for Beta Club Conventions. These are 3 that I remember being really good:
Bon Temps
Dragos
Johnson's Bouncaniere

Frezzos is one of the places that charges a credit card fee. They started not long before shut down.

FWIW- Uncle T’s does too or did last time I was there. Great food imo

The “really old” comment made me curious.

I figured you were older than the average here but not old enough to regularly eat at Dons downtown

Speaking of that- I really like the food at the Petroleum Club but the average age on Friday nights is probably pushing 75-80

I was never a regular at Dons. Reason being the food just wasn’t good. Last meal I had there was probably 6 years ago, from a Christmas gift. Yep, food wasn’t good and service was awful. Wife and I both agreed to not go back. Pretty much same results at the Hut. Didn’t think it was possible to mess up chargrilled oysters and a beer, but they managed to.

I’ve never tried anything else on the menu, but Rachael’s Cafe makes a fantastic Chicken Fried Steak.

at one time, Murph (OTG - owner) had the best po-boys in Laffy. Great location near campus/downtown and he had very little competition.

Pop's opened up several years ago on Jefferson St and is the new King of po-boys.... ain't even close.

I’ve never been to Pop’s, so I’ll have to try it my next time in Lafayette, as many seem to feel the same. The last time I was in Lafayette was on a Sunday, just passing through. I got a shrimp poboy at Acadiana Poboys on Verot School Road and it was surprisingly good.

And I just recently started adding Don's on Johnston to my rotation, service and food seemed great pre-rona.

You have my attention. I'm not sure why, but I'm interested. I've yet to find a chicken fried steak East of the Sabine river that isn't crap. It's not a frozen pre-battered patty served with brown gravy?
