They are just not a good repersentation of Louisiana KC anymore. Your local grocery store bakery prob makes a better KC.
The Randazzo's king cakes are exactly like they were 50 years ago. They are mass produced because the demand is there. Randazzo's and Haydel's are my two favorite.
What do you consider a "good representation of Louisiana king cake?"
Posted on 1/8/25 at 3:07 pm to Tigerdew
Randazzos and Haydels really? people from Louisiana actually get those? I thought those were just for tourists. We all know the real Louisiana king cakes are the small mom and pop places stop playing. Yall fixin loose your cajun card yall keep talking this bull butter.

Yea im on the same page as rest of yall Dong Phuong is not a good King Cake its another one of those tourist type places. Plain arse cinnamon bread with very little fillings. NO SIR!

We are way off topic. I didnt have any questions on whether they are good or not or overrated/not worth the wait....
I guess my question was answered. Look for resellers, but if you have to get one, just go early and wait in line. THats what I'll do.
FTR: I have been to 2 different KC parties where attendees brought there favorite without a box or name. Around 8 KC's were sampled at each party with the most famous 3 and a handfull of others... Dong Phuong was either the favorite or a close tie with the favorite. Blind tasting.
I think people just like to hate on things, especially when they get popular.

Ain't no such thing for anyone that's knows king cakes unless you're blindfolded. DP is mediocre as a king cake and I will gladly die on that hill.
As for you actually getting one, walk in will definitely be your best bet since the resellers get them on varying schedules. I'm sure you'll make some friends while waiting in line so just bring some coffee and a chair and hang out

last year I pulled into Zuppardos and saw a line going fairly far back. I asked one of them, is this a bourbon release line? They said no, DP. I said good luck and walked into the store.

You are correct. But when you see 8 other KC together outside their boxes they do start to blend. Sure you could probably figure it out with some study, but that wasnt the spirit of the party. Nobody was trying to spoil the intent. It was fun. We all got drunk and had great some great KC.
Some of the people had never had a DP and were impressed when the makers of each was listed.
I think DP is great. So does my family and a lot of others. But i like sweets and I've even enjoyed a walmart KC.... cause it was the only one.. I dont hate on any of them. Lots are good. I have a Calandros one at my house now. I'll probably get the DP next week.
ITS KING CAKE SEASON BAWS!

Friend,
Dong Phuong is the gold standard of the cinnamon flavored king cakes. I think nostalgia has people preferring Randazzo’s and Haydel’s. Every non-New Orleanian, including a few of the best bakers in NY, we have ever had try all three preferred Dong Phuong by a large margin. It is prepared in a superior way. We pre-purchased 15, five on three separate days, for pick up in the East. $25 each and we will mail all but one to friends and family in Chicago and New York. DP is the only king cake any of them request.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

Zuppardos gets them. They had a table full Sunday around 10 am. $34 for plan, $38 for filled.

I never saw the fanfare of Randazzos. It’s like a cult. So many better options.

Good to hear from you TL
I hope you and yours are doing well this holiday season.
I agree with most of the things you are behind but not this one.
In addition I think kc in our area has evolved into pretty interesting alternatives. Certainly DP is not traditional either and I think there is a ton of better options.
Cheers.

I'm the opposite. I've found very few king cakes that I really like. I felt DP was overrated and I've had all of the so-called "best" and none of them have really wowed me. My personal favorite is the amaretto walnut cream cheese from Keller's Bakery in Lafayette.

If this doesn't tell you all you need to know, I don't know what does.
