Had one. I consider it a long arse sandwich - not a traditional po-boy.

How can a Poboy shop not have a fried shrimp Poboy? And French fries for that matter. I’m more than happy not getting fried shrimp and fries, but how can you consider a place that doesn’t have these on the menu a true Poboy shop? No true Louisianaiana can deny this.

Well for one, their version of a shrimp Poboy, or should I clarify the surf and turf, is better than a regular fried shrimp Poboy in the first place

Tried Darrell’s in Lake Chuck. The hype that place gets is in no way justified, in my opinion. It was a decent lunch spot in Lake Charles but in no way compares to a good New Orleans Poboy shop. Overall, I don’t hate them, but I just can’t understand the cries to claim it’s the best Poboy. I’d be happy going back if I went with someone else, but I have no desire to ever try it again.

The bread - It was good for the first few bites but then the buttered top got to be too much. The flaky top was great but the underbelly of the bread was too soft. It also ended up being too much bread flavor, which along with the buttered top, overpowered the Poboy. It just in no way compares to good New Orleans bread. It just doesn’t. It’s not on the same level.

The meat and toppings - No complaint. They had enough meat and it was dressed adequately.

The menu - How can a Poboy shop not have a fried shrimp Poboy? And French fries for that matter. I’m more than happy not getting fried shrimp and fries, but how can you consider a place that doesn’t have these on the menu a true Poboy shop? No true Louisianaiana can deny this.

The atmosphere - Meh. Some of the best Poboy shops are hole in the walls. Not that it needs to, but you do need to point out that Darrell’s atmosphere brings nothing to the dining experience.

Let me guess. You're from New Orleans and end up disliking every restaurant you go to that isn't in New Orleans.

Because it's a bar and the Special used to be that good.

It isn't that good anymore and certainly isn't that good since the old man died and they got clean and corporate.

+1

Wasn't it the daughter that took it over? Seems like they changed the bread around that time and that made a big difference in quality. It is still good but not what it used to be.

The ads in the table threw me off too. Seems like they are trying to squeeze every penny out of that place. Darrell's was truly a unique place in that you could go in during restaurant time and everything be normal, then next thing you know it is bar time and everyone was playing beer pong and flip cup everywhere.

I'm not from New Orleans and I lived in LC for 5 years. Darrell's like all other restaurants over there is trash. The only one worth a shite is Luna. That's right Luna, not fricking Luna's like the idiot locals who can't read call it.

FWIW I was very excited to move there when I first did, but quickly realized that LC is in no way like anywhere in Louisiana, if anything it is East Texas. The food simply just sucks.

Rant over

Pretentious much? I know LC isn't some dining mecca but I don't know what to tell you if you can't find an enjoyable meal outside of Luna.

Have you been to LC lately? I just moved here temporarily for work in November. I agree most places suck but there several good places including Luna.

I feel that there have been a few places I’ve been that have been pretty good which is surprising with how small LC is…too many shitty chain restaurants for the size of it too

This. It's ok. It's not great and it's not terrible. Some of my Lake Chuck friends disagree though.

Left after Laura and never came back, don't plan on it either.

I felt that way too at first, but after sometime realized that the place just sucks in general. When you get greeted with "oh you aint from around here is you" it's usually a sign that a place sucks.

Anyways, hopefully some of that has changed since the hurricane passed as it certainly has some potential over there. But my experience overall was a total shithole.

Maybe this was the locals telling you they thought you sucked. What vibe were you sending out to make them say such a thing? From your pompous little attitude I’m thinking they might have been right.

They're always nice enough to me and I'm not from there. They promptly bring me my food and drink, which is all I'm asking for from a place such as that. I like going to Darrell's when I'm in town. They make a fine sandwich.

Well, I’m really only here during the week. And will be out of here in 7 months. Most weekends I go back to BR, Nola or Houston, but I really like Calla, Villa harlequin, fire & oak, and Vic and Anthony’s (had a work dinner last week and yes I realize it’s a corporate steakhouse)

Nothing was seriously wrong but nothing special with the James 710, Mazens, Pujo St, 1910, or Chart House

Still need to go to 121 artisan bistro or la truffe sauvage

My biggest issue with a lot of the places I just mentioned, food is wayyyyyyy overpriced for lake Charles

Eta: another problem is there is simply nothing to do here outside of the casinos for fun at night

I’ve never eaten at the one in lake Charles but the version they opened in Lafayette is pretty bad. I doubt it’s around much longer though because it’s always dead at lunch.

The other Darrell’s is in Jennings, and I’d rather a shrimp poboy from Bourbon St Cafe at the Shop Rite there, or dive an extra 10 minutes to C’est Bon for their fried shrimp poboy.

Lol at anyone who thinks a C’est Bon shrimp poboy with their shitty bread and lack on condiments is better than a Darrell’s sandwich
There are only about 3 things on c’est bob’s menu that are above avg

Also Darrell’s surf and turf sucks because it’s only the roast beef you get
Got to get the special - add shrimp
