I like Darrell's and agree with this but I have always thought the surf and turf would be much better if the shrimp were fried. Also agree with the OP about the fries. They need to invest in a fryer.

Yeah, but it’s weird to judge a restaurant negatively for not having a given menu item that they’ve never once served or claimed to (as opposed to being out of stock, put of season, or cut from the menu). It’d be like saying you were disappointed with popeyes for not offering a grilled chicken sandwich or McDonald’s for not having a patty melt style burger. It’s asinine.

But that label comes from the po'boy that they serve which many believe is a top tier po'boy compared to every variation of po'boy in every other shop.

Personally, I love a surf and turf from Darrel's. I have it well above "classic's" like the Ferdi Special from Mother's and even the Frenchaletta from Liuzza's. It's in the same tier as the surf & turf from Johnny's, the oyster po'boy from Buster's, and the R&O special. But I like sloppy po'boys, so that's why I really like Darrel's. I understand why someone might not care for it (especially if they only want fried seafood on a po'boy).

It's just dumb to judge them based on not offering a certain item. People don't say Judice Inn is a trash burger place because they don't serve french fries.

I guess it just depends on whether you define a great “po'boy shop” as being one that serves A really exceptional po’boy or one that serves a solid version of each standard po’boy (fried shrimp, fried catfish, fried oyster, and roast beef w/dubris).

In my mind, any place that has a po’boy on their menu worth stopping for (even if it’s not one of those common varieties), it could be a great po’boy shop. In my mind, you can have a great roast beef, mediocre catfish, and not serve shrimp at all and be a good po’boy place. Heck, you could do your own thing (like killer po’boys) and not have a single “standard” po’boy on the menu and still be great as long as what you do offer is delicious.

In your mind, what makes a great po’boy place is the ability to execute well all of the classics. The best joint shouldn’t just have one thing they’re good at, but should be well-rounded. It’s not enough to have a great roast beef, they should also excel at fried shrimp and oysters (when available). Consistency across the menu should be considered to separate the good places with a couple solid sandwiches from the truly great po’boy shops deserving hype and praise.

Neither metric is really wrong, as it’s all subjective. I just think Darrel’s surf and turf is worth stopping for, is an exceptionally tasty sandwich, and thus Darrel’s is a great place because it’s worth eating at for said sandwich.

Based on the hype of people saying it’s better than a New Orleans Poboy, I expected a Poboy better than New Orleans. It is not.

Never said it was bad. I said it doesn’t match the hype and I explained why I felt that way.
