I'm fine with bastardized tacos, but I just don't find Torchy's all that good outside of breakfast tacos, Brushfire, and queso. Velvet dumps all over it.

Velvet is the best imo.

Barbacoa
Shrimp and grits
Chicken tikka
Cuban
Kobe burger

All fire.

Ahi
Falafel
Fish & Chips

We were going to get takeout from them during the lockdown but they scaled their menu back to bare bones so we went to desperados!

Velvet Taco, which works to use locally sourced ingredients, opened its first restaurant in Dallas in 2011 and later expanded to Chicago, Houston and Fort Worth. The brand also has expanded to Austin and will open location in Atlanta, Ga., soon.

They don't franchise, all locations are company owned. So that will limit how fast they expand. And I'm sure covid has put the breaks on anything new.

For tacos? That’s absurd.

It’s so good.

@sal-man, they’re expanding, but not quickly. I think the Chicago one was pretty recent. In the last 3 years, they opened at least 3 new ones in DFW and 2 in Austin. Like Zappa said, they own each one so they move slower.

They did open/remodel one in downtown Austin during covid, but not sure if they’re doing any more locations right now.

Feel bad for Cajuns if y’all think Torchy’s has good tacos. These are made for hipsters in Austin and $4-5 / taco is absolutely egregious. Find a hole in the wall Mexican joi

Plus, it’s not like I can’t still slam $2 tacos at la Morenita. Other than the name, the two products aren’t even remotely similar and satisfy completely different cravings.

One of the things I loved about Gilla Brewery was that I could get delicious authentic tacos and burritos nextdoor at Taquiera Don Beto 2 and consume them at the brewery next door.

Damn Covid...

Naw. I still much prefer well-made authentic to a Velvet/Torchy's taco; however, they're a different meal entirely, and I'm not dragging a group of 10 friends to my favorite taco truck and expecting them all to thrilled about the experience of eating tacos out of a iffy looking truck.

Went the other day for the first time and thought everything was very good. We called it in but still waited a good 15 minutes or so. My only complaint, which is out of their control, is that we had to sit outside because inside was full and it was hot as hell with absolutely no breeze. I was pouring sweat from the humidity and by the time our food came out I just didn’t have much of an appetite for hot food. I’ll wait and go again when I can eat inside or just get it to go.

One funny thing, a lady came out and stopped and told us sitting at the tables outside that it was the absolutely worst food she had ever eaten. She was dead serious. I was wondering how bad a taco could possibly be. Everything we ordered was very good. Some people can never be pleased.

that's impossible. Matter of fact, it's impossible for any taco to be overrated. Tacos are fricking delicious. Even bad tacos are delicious. Those fried rat meat tacos from Jack in the Box are delicious. Taco Bell tacos are delicious. The ones I get from the bus parked by the flea market are delicious.

Tacos are good and if you don't like them you need to take a long look in the mirror
