I'd definitely try it. I probably wouldn't follow the recipe that closely other than just how to make the meatballs but that could definitely work

I know it's an abomination and whatnot with the tomatoes, being vegan, etc., But the pictures actually look kind of tasty.

Not Gumbo, that’s veggie soup

an abomination
This local chick who has a New Orleans "foodie" IG page with a decent # of followers did a video series tutorial of herself making gumbo. She didn't call it non-traditional or her take on gumbo or anything like this. But this is how she made it:
Quartered and browned sausage.
Removed, browned her trinity.
Added jarred roux (the wet mixed one) AND jarred dry instant roux. Heated with the veggies.
Added canned tomatoes + water.
Put in a bag of gumbo crabs + a container of lump crab meat.
Tossed in a raw package of chicken thighs.
Added bay leaf, Tonys, pepper, oregano, and 1 cube each of beef base (??) and shrimp base.
Added a can of tomato sauce.
Finished with a bag of frozen "Texas peeled" shrimp + a bag of frozen chopped okra.
Served over parboiled rice.
The finished product looked fine, but crab + chicken thighs + shrimp + beef base?!

No worse than the "jambalaya" that was the No. 2 Cajun food item on a Food Network show. It was from a place in California and was more of a chicken and shrimp creole poured in a bowl with a scoop of plain white rice in the center. It looked tasty, but it had no business claiming to be jambalaya.

There are a lot of vegan things I’ll try...but gumbo is not one

Gumbo z’herbes is a good vegan option.

The oregano is as out of place as the beef base.

Doesn’t appeal to me, but great that you enjoyed it.

Absolutely delicious.
I’ve had one. I don’t believe you. Unless as mentioned, you’re calling a nice vegetable soup, “gumbo”?

I remember meeting up with some coworkers at a place called the Elephant Bar in Torrance, CA a few years ago. It was essentially just as you described it
