Big butts in central is pumping out some pretty good bbq. Shell station at joor and lovett.
This!!
Beats anything BR has to offer (though I haven't tried Hannah's & Unleaded yet).
There sides are OK, but the brisket is EXCELLENT. Also, love their pulled pork poBoy.
The station owners just took out the small seating area

Big Butts is closed on Sundays, but serve 11AM - 8PM rest of the week.

I’d counter and say instead of settling for mediocre bbq that bbq restaurants in Baton Rouge need to do better.
Should start watching Chud or Scientist's videos. They have some good tips.
There's so much culinary cross-pollination between TX and LA. Hard to go to a seafood restaurant here without acknowledging Cajun influence. Saw where Best Stop will begin selling their stuff in The Woodlands, Katy, and New Braunfels.
One exception seems to be TX BBQ can't punch through the Sabine firewall. John Lewis started a TX joint in Charleston that seems to thrive. Bewildering that no one has tried that yet in BR.

I ate over there mid week. I went with high hopes that it would be good, but realistic expectations. I could not have been more disappointed with the bbq, sides, sauces and even the bread. The ribs were dry and tasted like charcoal or something that was very off-putting. The brisket was dry and lacked flavor. Beans I ordered for side were like some weird bean stew and the other salad I ordered lacked flavor. The sauces were weak to say the least. I would like to chalk it up to them just opening, but if you are a little master you have been grilling for a while and have your craft perfected, first week shouldn’t matter. I will give it another shot, but not optimistic.

Went last Thursday. Brisket was alright, little too burnt on the ends but I think I just got a bad cut compared to others at my table. Pulled pork was pretty darn good. Also had the collards and spoon bread that took the cake. Hope Unleaded makes it, solid location for a bbq joint. Can’t beat a patio at the overpass.

You think this looks ok?
No, I was trying to be nice I guess. I don't even know why BBQ joints in Louisiana try to do brisket. Just stick to pork and chicken.

Nothing much better in BR
Sides are good
Chicken and pork are okay
Not a fan of the brisket
Nice bourbon selection though

Went to Unleaded today and it was very good.
I can't speak on brisket and ribs from any BBQ place b/c I'll eat ribs at Golden Corral.
But the pulled pork sandwich on Texas Toast drizzled with their garlic honey BBQ sauce is damned good. And their greens are the best in the world. Unlike any other greens I've had. Spicy and full of sausage and flavor.
The pulled pork sammich paired with a side of those greens and you got a damned fine meal. Solid

Wanted to give this thread a bump.
Been having the chopped brisket sandwich on Texas toast with a side of Mac and cheese. It’s been outstanding every time for me. Perfect meat to fat ratio and plenty to fill up on. Love Mac and cheese with lots of black pepper so win win. Total is $13.67. I’ll take paying a little more for a lunch with people that smile, say hello, ask me if I like the food, & have a great day than here’s your shite $10 drive thru.
Only problem I’ve had is with the beans. I grew up on sweet BBQ baked beans my whole life. These definitely have more of a vinegar bold flavor. Not that they are bad, just not my cup of tea.

I'll have to give it another try. We went twice right after they first opened. It was ok, but it wasn't great.

Never base how good a BBQ place is based on their pork offerings.

I've always like Phil, hopefully he does well with this venture.
