Mexican food in general used to be cheap
Still relatively cheap, depends on your location

Most pho places now charge $12-$15 for a bowl of Pho.
Go to Pho NOLA
You can get a bowl of Pho AND a Banh Mi for like $12

Wings are ridiculous.
Almost $2 a wing is just absurd, and you see that a lot now.
a fast food hamburger combo is damn near $10. I can go to riverside patty and get a real hamburger for $10.
and what i think has been the most absurd is chinese food.
Chinese food is supposed to be cheap shite. now it's expensive shite. you get some teriyaki chicken on a stick, 2 meat plates, and some lo mein and it's easily $50. It's easily twice as much as it used to be.

Long, long ago in New England, lobsters were used as livestock feed, and then somebody tasted one cooked.

There was a time when pizza was cheap. There's just not much to a plain cheese pizza.
As others have mentioned, tongue and oxtails were once cheap. I attribute some of that to hispanics and folks from the Caribbean coming in. There isn't much meat on a tail, but it is quite good. Tongue tacos are quite good too. I guess beef heart will be next.

Shoot, oysters and crabs were cheap at one time. When I was in school, we would go to this place that had a dozen oysters for $3.00 and a pitcher of beer was the same price.

Yeah, Chinese used to be super cheap when you could make a combo plate of whatever you wanted for less than $10 during lunch time.
Then they closed the buffet (even though many of the small takeout spots actually had the employee doing the scooping for you) during Covid and never brought them back.
The little buffet by the register at Nine Dragon just sits there with boxes and napkins in it now.

I miss cheap steaks, like the cheap cuts for cheap.. not they are insanely priced.
If I find a brisket for $2.49 a lb I am buying some to grind and smoke...

Flat Irons were $4.99/# when first introduced to the market, went up to $8.99/# with popularity and are currently $12.99/#.
Could buy short ribs for $2.49/# about 15 years ago. Then $5.49/# after every host on Food Network started cooking them. Now they retail for $10.49/#.

Wings used to be cheap bar food. Now it’s like a delicacy. Prices are at a premium for them
The bar I’m a regular to has made me realize all these places just refuse to bring prices down. Monday and Wednesday they do all you can eat for $15.99 with a side of fries. If you order 12 wings with no side it’s $17.99. On Tuesdays they do 10 wings for $6.90. It’s crazy.

Yeah even in the wing peak, Ivars only upped their Wednesday special to $0.70 wings. The special is still at that price now. $7 for 10 not too shabby.
Their non-Wednesday deal is maybe double that? Maybe not quite double. Still cheaper than elsewhere.

Chicken Cracklin’ used to be worth $0. Now they’re $15/lb.
But they’re still totally worth it

Soul food in general use to be extremely cheap. Honestly, started getting expensive even prior to Covid

Without looking it up, I can say this is can’t be right. I challenge anyone who can find pho under $10 and regular banh mi under $5 anywhere in LA.

$0.59, $0.79, $0.99 ... Chilitos and Nachos Supreme were in the $0.99 group.

That’s actually pretty accurate. I’ve seen that deal. It’s a pork bahn mi and a very small pho. Almost like a child’s portion. It might be like $12.
