The big 2024 crawfish low supply threat.

My local market has frozen Louisiana tails for $9.99lb this week.
Should I grab and hoard bunch like it's 2020 toilet paper?
I'm thinking about ten packs. Am I being overly cautious ?

How much. Do you think they will go up? Let’s say $3 per pack. You purchase 10 packs and you save $30. Is $30 enough to store $100 worth of crawfish in your freezer for X months?

10 packs of frozen crawfish is about the size of a small shoe box. It's not like he's storing a side of beef. And 9.99 is a helluva price for La tails. If there is a prolonged shortage I bet they go up considerably from 9.99. So yes OP, I would hoard you some tails at that price if they are something you run thru pretty regularly.

Swamp donkey crawfish here in Kingwood had them last night for $14 a pound. It was quite crowded to my surprise.

Some place over here is selling them boiled for 13.99/lb
No thanks

$10/lb FROZEN?!
Isn’t that a function of it being January? Depends on when you need them, but by April it’s gotta at least go below $6 boiled…

It's tail meat. Likely from last year's harvest.

I honestly didn’t know frozen Louisiana crawfish was even a thing. Anytime I see it out of the corner of my eye I assume it’s from China.

Probably but t I’ve had success with crawfish tails older than a year.

In DFW I’d kill for $10 a lb for frozen tails. Send me some

Yep. In Georgia, the most available option is at Wal-Mart for around $13 bucks for 3/4 pound package. But nice to have the option I guess.

Where do you live?

Can you export to Germany? Could be some real $$ based on that other thread.

I bought some when I arrived to Lafayette from Abu Dhabi on Dec 23rd for the holidays, and they were this year's peeled crawfish and only $11.99 per pound which I thought was cheap during this so called shortage. Also, a bit early to peel but this guy has his own ponds and a seafood processing plant. I bought 10 packs and stuck 9 of them in the freezer and will take them back with me when I fly back to AD.
On the live crawfish market. Was with my cousin at his pond Thursday afternoon and he was actually catching a few, mostly small but a few medium to big ones, in 2 10 acre tracks. They were offering him $9.35 per pound live that day for any size. 33 pounds x $9.35 = $309 per sack which is crazy, but some restaurant had them already spoken for at $16.00 per pound boiled. Crazy market.
The little crawfish they had says that Feb/March those will be a good size and he will catch in that pond, so the drought did not hurt that specific pond too much.

Double check to see if these frozen crawfish for $9.99 are not last year's crawfish (like March-May 2022 and peeled and frozen). Even if they are, that is fine as long as not freezer burnt.
This year its early to peel since a shortage, but like I mentioned in the earlier post, I found some fresh crawfish peeled from Nov/Dec. that the processor owns his ponds and had some peeled early.

Don't know that I'd hoard but I just grabbed a pack of froazen tails for $12 outside San Antonio at HEB. Think I've seen them cheaper before but not sure. Might be the only way I eat any this year. Last year we had to pay $10 boiled and somewhere near $4 live. Wondering if we'll get any this year regardless of cost.
Saw frozen UNshelled for the first time. 3lb package for around $9.
