No way. I'd say 10 to 15 cents a cup. MAX

You're realistically looking at ~20 cents variable cost per soft drink in an average drink. But you have to include ice, maintenance, energy, hardware(hoses, tanks, install etc). Yeah. Soft drinks are a cash cow and $3 is ridiculous.

I believe Pepsi or coke will also sometimes install and set up and maintain your lines to use their product.

I usually get iced tea or water at a restaurant, but sometimes I want to slam down a few fountain diet cokes.

I know it sounds cheap, but nothing pisses me off more than when I order a Diet Coke and they bring out a can. Usually happens at smaller ethnic restaurants, but I'll change my drink order to water or tea before they crack open that drink.

I know, and it is, but dammit I want to slam down a bunch of drinks, not pay $2 a piece for a canned drink.

Definitely hear that.

I don't like my Diet Coke in the can to be poured into a cup anyway. I don't even do it at home. If there are no cold cans in the fridge, I run to Circle K or I go without.

Nope wrong. I used to run my own restaurant. This was a quick analysis I did a while back.

There is around 3960 ounces served in a 5 gallon ($70each) bag in the box which puts the cost at $.02/oz ($70/3960) Most restaurants use 20 ounces cups or something similar. I would assume that at least 10-15 ounces of coke go into a cup. So @12.5(assume the middle) ounces per cup

1 Fill= $.25 + Ice (assume $.05) + Foam Cup & Lid-$.07(or diswashing fee for plastic/glass cup) + CO2 tank (assume $.005 per oz)= $.43 cost

2 Fills= $.50 + Ice + Cup= $.68 cost

3 Fills= $.75 + Ice + Cup= cost $.93

4 Fills= $1.00 + Ice+ Cup= cost $1.18

The only thing I didn't add in here is the cost of electricity to run the machine which would be hard to quantify and the cost of the servers to bring it to you. Restaurants do make money on soft drinks but I don't think it is as much as most people think after everything is factored in.

When I eat out, I typically drink 2-3 glasses of diet coke.. Especially if there's a long wait for food. I sip without even really realizing it, not even thirsty. Oral fixation more than anything else.

Deal with it.

good job.
I was close.
But. Your price on syrup bags is high. I routinely saw them around $50.

Yeah, it's kinda funny. At home, I rarely refill my drink during a meal. But I can go through 2-3 at a restaurant.

Yes, I haven't paid for a piece of equipment or any service.

Tea has a higher profit margin. I love the south and their need to have a sweet tea.

Same. I usually go through maybe half a can. But in a restaurant I plow through refills.

Actually it has gone up since I purchased them. Here's
A link to sam's which was always cheaper than buying from coke and getting it delivered. Sam's is $82. So $82/320= $.26 per 12 oz drink. I want to say that Sam's was $5-$10 cheaper than coke for a 5 gal bag in the box when I was buying them.

Sam's price

+1
For me the taste of a can coke is too strong. Fountain tastes better and more refreshing. Usually get water though.

Well it definitely has for some. I used to purchase them for under $50 many years ago. Seems like I even paid in the 30s at one point. I actually do have clients who are still paying about $50/bag. As with everything in food/drink industry, it's all about buying power.

If by chance I drink one it is a Barqs in an ice cold bottle only.

And Jason you need to add all of the rest of your overhead and profit as well because you aren't in it for free. Insurance, both GL and workers comp, rent or mortgage, payroll, water, sewer, garbage pick up , linen etc...all the items not producing dollars that have to be accounted for.

Most consumers especially non business owners have no clue as to the actual cost of a product. Make a payroll every Friday and you don't complain as much about the cost of a soft drink.
