Costco. The kirklands anejo throws down a gauntlet to anything under $120 a bottle.

It's $23 and AMAZING over ice or even neat.

Best I've had was El Tessoro Platinum.

While not a "value" pick, Don Julio 1942 is the only one I've ever been able to drink neat

A lot of great suggestions in this thread.

Don Julio Añejo
&

Tres Generaciones

Are both great for a >$50 budget.

Don Julio 1942
Is top tier stuff if $ is not a factor in your decision. Also, Espolon Bourbon Barrel Finish Añejo for >$40 is hard to beat. Now to complicate things even further, Casamigos Añejo is the best quality for the price for a <$50->$60 option.

Corzo is an excellent sipping tequila. It is really smooth for tequila.

Corzo is fantastic, Don Julio is very good.

First of all, make sure you get something labeled "100% Agave". Next, if youre new to tequila go for an añejo. The barrel aging will help cut the alcohol burn. Makes for a more complex experience for the beginner.

Most 100% agave añejos will be fine for you to start. You'll appreciate the finer stuff later. If you want a twist I suggest an orange peel, or squeeze the juice of an orange slice.

And for those outside of Louisiana, the best tequila I've had is Innocente. Even the silver was more complex and full-bodied than most añejos. But I have not found it anywhere in Louisiana.

ETA, best tequila on a budget is El Jimador. The Repasado is fantastic for under $30.

Esparanto five year if you can get it. Fantastic sipping tequila.

ETA: Not inexpensive. Runs $140-$160 a bottle.

thanks for the recommendations.

i went with an anejos, 100% agave for about $25 (can't remember the name--hornitos?) great for sipping but i'll reserve for colder weather (reminds me of brandy). I actually like some alcohol burn. also had a silver that i really liked, too.

But the point is thanks for the recommendations. have a starting place now.
