Branching out from bourbon and wanted to get the boards opinion of a good tequila to try. We mainly do homemade margaritas, ranch water. I’d like something relatively accessible and not crazy expensive. To this point in my journey, I feel I’m more of a blanco man. TIA

I get my tequila from Costco. It is the Kirkland branded bottle of Silver Tequila that comes in one of those wide style bottles in the 1.75 size. It costs under $20 and makes for a good mixer or for drinking straight.

This is a clear tequila.

I’m a big fan of El Tesoro. You can (or used to) find it at Albertsons for $35.00. Just as smooth as $45+ Tequila. Fortaleza is good. But it’s going to run you closer to $50

Also, Patron and Casamigos get a bad rep because they are “mainstream” popular Tequilas. But the reality is they are both good (even if probably over-priced).

People who say higher end tequila shouldn’t be used in mixed drinks (such as a margarita or Paloma) are wannabe snobs. The higher end stuff absolutely makes a difference. Good tequila, Cointreau (or something similar) and fresh lime juice on a summer afternoon is one of life’s simple pleasures. Make your own at home with good ingredients and you’ll never want to drink the sugary weak shite at a Mexican restaurant again

Honestly, it’s not fancy but I really like Espolon.

Casamigos not bad either.

I buy this one too-the Blanco. It is a good value IMO. I make margaritas with it, so need to spend more IMO.

This is so true. We’ve been making spicy margaritas like crazy lately. Tequila, fresh lime, agave and water. Crowd pleaser. All about the ingredients

I always get espolon by the handle since I go through it. Definitely the best bang for the buck

Disclaimer: I don't drink a whole lot of tequila.

Tres Agaves is the best bang for buck for what I've had
1800 is pretty good, but I think it's a little more expensive that Tres Agaves
Teremana (The Rock's Tequila) is not very good

If you like bourbon, maybe try some mezcal as a good mix between bourbon and tequila. Unless you just want tequila, then knock your socks off, literally the tequila will do that lol

Definitely no need for high-end tequila for those. I use 1800 to make margaritas. If it's sipping tequila it's Azul or Esperanto (5 year).

Reposado adds a nice smokey flavor, another dimension.

Lalo is really good although I wouldn't make a marg with it. Lalo is the grandson of Don Julio.

Fortaleza Reposado is the best value for real Tequila.

Siete Leguas is great too; avoid stuff like Casamigos as it's artificially flavored. The agave can produce vanilla notes but nothing like the artificial vanilla bomb in some of those diffuser made products.

Here's a good list to start with: Additive Free Tequila

Espolon Anejo and Blanco are good for ranch waters. The Reposado is too dark. I use the Reposado for margaritas though. All are super affordable.

1800, Casamigos, and Tres Agaves are all great.

Espolon repo is my go to. I'll do 1800 if they don't have Espolon. In the same price range, The Rock's tequila (Teramana) and Cazadores are not bad alternatives.

If I want to spend a little more I go between Herradura (my favorite based on taste, not price,) Patron or Clase Azul.

I am not a fan of anejos, especially the ones that taste like whiskey-flavored tequila but to each their own. Unpopular take here, I guess: I think Casamigos is shite. I understand nuanced flavors is normally a good thing but there's something in Casamigos I do not like.

It has like a vanilla flavor that just doesn't feel like tequila to me. I much prefer something like Patron over it

We had some mezcal in Mexico recently. It was a good change from beer. Any drink recommendations with mezcal, or just straight?
