My grandpa sold his sugarcane to the Steen Mill so it was a staple in the house when i was growing up.

Nope, just found that cane syrup leaves a bitter after taste that maple doesn't. BTW, I discovered this at age 9 so the wife was not an issue.

A man I knew in Missississippi had this old mule drawn press setup that he used to exctract the sugarcane juice to make the syrup. He'd throw a big party every year when he made it. I never got invited though.

I knew a man in Mississippi that made peach flavored moonshine. Every year he had a big party.
I was invited.
I wasn't invited back.

i never heard of steens til i moved down here 5 years ago. my wife said she grew up eating it in lafayette. i use it in all kinds of stuff now; pecan pie, bbq sauce, syrup on ice cream and as a rub on smoked tri-tip (i add the steens to the meat first then add my dry rub).

Steens frickin' rocks. I love it w/ some sweet potato pancakes, or drizzled over some sweet cornbread w/ milk...

i get it drop shipped to northern va. grew up on it (from s'port but all my people are from down south). i love it. i tried maple and it made my teeth hurt - people look at me like i'm crazy when i tell them maple syrup sucks.
and yes, i've had REAL maple syrup. it REALLY sucks.
back in the day though, like the 70s or early 80s, at the ms state fair in jackson, the ms state ag department had a little exhibit right inside the main gate. had old fellas in overhauls putting cane in a press and a mule walking around in a circle crushing it. and it running down the pan over a hardwood fire.
and under a tent they had ladies in gingham dresses making home made biscuits. and you stood in line, and they would take one of those oven fresh biscuits and stick a wooden dowel rod in the middle and fill it up with fresh cane syrup. and it was FREE.
best. fair. ride. EVAH!!

When I was a kid, my mother would make popcorn balls with it, after boiling it down until it made a ball when dropped in cool water. I think I'll make some soon, in memory of MOM.
Would appreciate if you would post how to make those popcorn balls with Steen's. My grandmother used to make them and all I can remember is Steen's, a buttload of butter, popcorn and a stove?? I would love to make some for my kids.
