Had my first shot of rye the other night. I didn't expect it to be so sweet. I think I always associated it with rye bread which has a stronger flavor than white bread.

It was Bulleit rye, which I can get a big bottle of at Costco for $36.

Should get some spiciness and fruitiness from the rye.

Get you some Willet, angels envy, and EH Taylor rye and enjoy life.

Most rye will have a clove kind of spice that sits on the middle back of your tongue and does a delightful dance.

all solid and I would also add a bottle of Michter’s Single Barrel and High West double rye

all of them bring some very different to the palate

Very few companies actually make their own rye....
Angels envy being one of the more expensive ones that doesn't. It's good, but I find it hard to spend that kind of money on it when they don't even distill it.

EH Taylor is a real good one, you can hammer that one neat as well.
My favorites are knob creek rye, EH Taylor Rye (buffalo trace) and Whistle Pig Rye. All 3 are made by said companies, not bought recipes.

I think High West is getting to the point of almost having their own now. When they first started they had to buy product to put on the shelves. But, they have been in business for a good bit now. They have good stuff and it isn't crazy expensive

Not sure where you're getting your information from. They are absolutely distilling their own Rye whiskey. Just out of curiousity who do you think is sourcing for them?

Yeh man.... I research my stuff before I buy. I went full dumbass on seeing who actually makes it after visiting Garrison Bros and seeing their set up. One of their guys was out there and he said you'd be surprised at how many people don't actually distill and just develop a brand. That goes for bourbon and Rye, but more so Rye.

Michters is another one I think. Also.... I'm am pretty sure Bulliet does not make theirs either. They make all their other stuff, but not their Rye.

You're right. They have recently started their own stuff, should have been more clear on that one.

From what I've read apparently Rye is tougher to distill and age which is why a lot of companies don't do it.

A little FYI... there is a tiny arse distillery in banff, Canada called park. Around 2014 they started distilling their Glacier Rye, an un-aged Rye. They already have some aging. But, you call it whiskey until it's been aged or something of the sorts. Have a fifth of the glacier Rye in the cabinet cause it was different. Only vodka, gin and Rye made with glacier water literally straight from the glacier. Vodka is only distilled 3Xs if I remember, so it has a flavor, but is super smooth. Didn't get to taste the gin b/c they were making it when we were there.

That is why I rotfl at some in the whisky thread, arguing which is better when both likely shared a barrel is cute.

For those interested, here is a list of most of the actual US distilleries (Part I) along with a list of of the companies bottling the product made in the those distilleries (Part II). Although the list is no longer being updated as of this past Spring it gives a decent overview of the current lay of the land.

Yeh man... fredricksburg is the shite. Wine and whiskey for days.

Brought back a couple bottles of the single barrel... man I liked that stuff. Can only find their regular bottles around here. It's expensive, but it's a small operation and literally everything is done on site. Some people don't like it b/c they say the whiskey is young. But, like they say due to the heat, they get faster aging. That being said, this comes from the same folks that are paying the same if not more for a label....

Used to be distilled somewhere in Indiana if I'm not mistaken. May still be, not sure.

I really like the Russel's Reserve 10 year rye. I'm not crazy about rye in general, but will drink it.

Bulleit rye

I believe that it is charcoal filtered like Tennessee whiskey, which gives it, and its bourbon cousin, a sweeter flavor. Other ryes aren't so sweet.

But it is good stuff.

And do not look down your nose at Old Overholt. Inexpensive and good.

Rye whiskey, I cry!
