I kind of agree with this. In looking at a new place to try, the only real research I do is studying the menu to see if anything excites me. I very rarely (almost never) use sites like Yelp or even a facebook page.
Honestly the only place I'll look at reviews is here if someone starts a thread about the place I'm thinking of trying. And about 90% of the input gets ignored anyway since people like to review things (whether they be food, movies, books, etc) without having ate/watch/read them.
I visit a place and try it to form my own opinion.

I like to look at yelp before going to a new place to see what they do best. It's obviously not the be all end all, but when the owner of a place is a complete arse to customers, it tells you a lot about the fiber of a place.

Never make a decision on local places from online reviews. I will occasionally use them on out of town places, but more often than not I can get a better idea actually looking at online menus as well.
Online reviews can often tell you what places are really good or really bad. It's hard to get (or expect) too much more nuance out of them beyond that.

I definitely look at online menus. One other time I'll look at, usually urbanspoon, is when I want to see pictures. I rarely look at the reviews if I do that, though. I love seeing pictures of the dishes served.
