) If you go to a Smokehouses/BBQ place look for a place with a large parking lot.. places with bad food don’t need a lot of places to park.

This is one that needs to be scratched from the list

Ate at Dreamland last month. It was decent. Not great. Not bad. Decent. Would eat it again but not go out of my way for it.

True, unless you are a long way from home.

Just no. Eat where the local cops/EMS/first responders eat. They are usually in the know.

So like 7/11?

Reminds me of something Hold The Mayo said. "You never want to see mostly old people at a Restaurant you know the food will be bland. Old people like bland food. "

This backfired on me once.

Road trip, lunchtime on a weekday, going through Tupelo on my way to Arkansas. I found a tiny old fashioned BBQ joint on the outskirts of town, parking lot had the cops, contractor vehicles, etc, I figured this was the spot.

The BBQ was horrible, the sides were horrible. I was confused. As I'm looking around at other people's plates, it was all fried catfish. Then I realized it was fried catfish day and apparently that's the only thing people get at this spot.

So don't trust the local's presence alone, pay attention to what they are ordering.

#1 is the one I find carrying the most truth.

Too many out of town/state restaurants think all they have to do is throw a bunch of Tony's and some Tabasco in a dish and that automatically makes it "Genuine Cajun" to rival what we here in La. eat on a daily basis.

WRONG.....

Ha, something like this happened to us once. We came across a hole-in-the-wall place called BBQ and Biscuits in rural Georgia. The parking lot was full so we decided to try it. On the way to our table, I noticed that most everyone was eating something other than BBQ. I ordered a burger. My wife ordered ribs and asked if I was feeling ok. I told her the burgers looked good -- and they were. The ribs were terrible, so bad in fact, we too almost all of them home. I offered one to our dog -- a full rib with meat, not just the bone -- she sniffed and walked away.

She was a smart dog and she knew her BBQ. For really good rib bones, she took them and ate them immediately. For decent ribs, she buried them in my wife's flowerbed for a couple of days to let them get just right. And if they were no good, she walked away.

I worked with both for a minute and they ate gas station hot dogs, mostly.

For good Mexican, look for the hole in the wall Mex grocery, see if the parking lot fills with landscaper trucks at lunch. Usually a sign they have some legit Mx food.

Well yeah they do a lot of that too. Maybe I should rephrase to eat where the locals eat.

Well…unless you are a gas station hot dog aficionado. And in Baton Rouge you probably are getting some of the best there since we sorely lack a good hot dog scene.
