How is Restaurant Depot's meat selection and prices? I have never been and wandering if this is a good spot to get meats for smoking/bbq.

It’s good for bulk and large cuts. Their prices aren’t spectacular, but you’re not going to overpay. You pretty much pay the going rate.

They are much cheaper in price than the going rate, IMO. Whole tenderloin filets will come in 3 different grades. Great place to pick up a brisket (also several grades) or pork butt. Always much cheaper than any grocery store and also Costco unless there is a fire sale on something.

What are the requirements to get into Restaurant Depot? I'm not familiar with what the website is requesting for membership.

You have to have a tax certificate for resell as most restaurants do. They’re wholesalers, they’re not there for any Tom, Dick, or Harry to roll in there looking for pricing cheaper than Costco.

Not anymore, they changed it to any business license (or occupational permit).

4.19 for choice brisket today, 3.90 for select. Ground meat 90% $3.65/lb, 73% $2.56/lb.

Bottom round flat $3.49/lb (13lbs), but got that for 25% off today, made my own ground meat and have a roast to screw with the next couple days.

Halloumi going for less than $5 for a regular size block. Mint $5.37/lb (limes 3.89 5#) so that alone makes it worth the trip during mojito season.

For those in the industry or who have been, at mid/high level restaurants how much comes from generic suppliers/vendors (who presumably deliver to the restaurant) vs. how much is obtained from something like Restaurant Depot or specialty suppliers?

From what I have seen, almost every food truck is going to Restaurant Depot for almost everything.

Saffron had a full cart top/bottom today checking out. Had everything from meat, greens, veggies/fruits. Looked like enough for a solid special for 30 people or so.

Talking to a friend who is in the industry, he said most restaurants use it as a top off every week. Says their supply is inconsistent and that no way someone could really stock based on what they have.

Hmmm, wasn’t aware they changed that, must be a fairly recent thing, but I haven’t been in an RD in probably 6 months.

Any restaurant doing any real volume is relying on delivered product from distributors, whether broadline, like US Foods, Sysco, etc., or specialty (produce, specialty meats, etc.) for 99% of their product. RD is there as a backup for things they forgot, were shorted on delivery, etc. and for low volume farm leaguers like food trucks.

This is correct. I had an account in New Orleans, but hadn’t gone in a while. Apparently they purge their customer list. Tried to join again and couldn’t because I don’t have a business license, just an LLC. Which they had accepted before.

Selection is good for the peasants. Their meat isn’t fit for movers and shakers, but it’s ok for a neighborhood cookout.

I disagree. I've had great filet and brisket from there. I am sure there is some high end butcher charging 50% more that has a superior product, if that is what you are talking about, but their meat quality beats or is equal to anything a regular consumer can get from a high end grocery store.
