Somebody croaked from an oyster as Fish House in Monroe several years ago. Turns out they were old, with a week immune system and a bad liver. Some people aren't supposed to be knocking back raw seafood.

You are right Balls .. more detail:

BISMARCK - A former North Dakota state lawmaker was hospitalized in New Orleans over the weekend due to what doctors believe is a bacteria from eating raw oysters, her husband said Monday, Oct. 29.

RaeAnn Kelsch, who represented a Mandan district in the state House from 1991 to 2012, was in the intensive care unit of a New Orleans hospital late Monday morning, her husband Tom Kelsch said. The couple were visiting a niece and nephew in the area.

A CaringBridge page said Monday morning she had an infection "spread everywhere and affecting many organs." The post said she was on a ventilator and dialysis.

"She's been stable since probably yesterday evening, and they're hoping that the antibiotics will start to work," Tom Kelsch said.

Tom Kelsch said doctors believe his wife is suffering from vibrio vulnificus. Most people in the U.S. become infected with it from eating raw or undercooked shellfish, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"She has been and is really sick," Tom Kelsch said.

RaeAnn Kelsch was the chairwoman of the House Education Committee for 15 years, according to a letter to the editor she penned in 2012. She was defeated by a fellow Republican in that year's primary election, and now is a registered lobbyist for groups like the National Federation of Independent Business

Yep. A few people die from vibrio in raw oysters every year. Its always old people usually with underlying problems

You can also get Hepatitis from oysters but its not chronic hepatitis (not B or C)

What in your quote confirms Balls's statement? I'm not saying he's wrong by the way, I just don't see how your quote confirms his assertion?

Nope but if she was sick and had a compromised immune system it doesn’t matter. That’s why they have those signs out all over the place and on menus. Have to pay attention to your health when eating raw oysters. Vibrio isn’t something to frick around with.

Can’t remeber right off hand b/c I’ve been out of the medical field for a while now... but vibrio is the same bacteria you can get from the marsh in stagnant water though cuts etc. I’m not sure if this is the same “strain” of vibrio bacteria, but we used to debride a bunch of wounds every year in ortho on the coast. It’s some serious shite...

Can be the cause of many issues such as compromised immune system, improper handling of the Oysters by many people and the higher temperatures in the water later than usual this year.

No - You should know better than that counselor. But you probably would love a case like that.

U care to comment on the case?
