Welcome aboard! I'm a new kid on the block too, just joined this week. But hey, at least we found this board right? Everyone here has been very supportive. Congrats for taking the first step! Let's just hope we can all get thru King Cake season alive.

when you get off of atkins and start reintroducing your body to far more than 20g of carbs a day, it is shocked in the other direction and stores it like it will never get carbs again and you'll pack almost all of that back on ... just seems like a waste of three weeks and some setting yourself up for frustration on the scale in a month or so to me ...
rag..i dont disagree. the thing about atkins is it does a fantastic job of burning FAT but is probably more geared to people who are looking to lose a lot of weight because it definitely is easier to stick to for people who have problems dealing with being 'hungry' all the time.
i guess the balance is more where this falls for people who can get motivated when they see the weight will fall off rapidly who dont think 'dieting' works. it could inspire that person to keep at it.
if you lose 100lbs on atkins, switching to a 1500/1800 calorie program afterward won't suddenly cause you to gain that 100 lbs back as your body is getting re-adjusted but as you said, you use it just to lose a quick 20 you could possibly gain a good bit of that back.

not really on any special diet, just really watch the sizes of my portions and have never really been a fan at all of ice cream, cakes, pies, or candy .. so i really don't crave sweets ...
and this is also true for me. there's really no upside (hypertension, diabetes, blood sugar spike) to eating sweets. i don't miss them all that much although my eyes do linger occasionally on that pot-sticker donut in the starbucks display
for me if i eat a handful of m&ms..they taste great..but about 30 minutes later i feel like complete shite. knowing that keeps me from giving in and eating that sugared doo-dad. my body doesn't like the sugar spike.
yes myth is the man
oh and welcome general. people on this board aren't *COMPLETE* asses in every single thread.

No matter what diet you use, if you go back to eating like you used to the second you stop, you will gain the weight back.

I'm a bit grumpy. I have basically been stuck on 215-16 all week.

yeah, totally agree with you .. you are basically tricking your body into what is called ketosis, where it no longer uses carbs for energy, but uses the stored fats for energy and the weight falls off .. as soon as you give the body carbs again, not only does that stop .. but your metabolism slows drastically because your body is storing the fat at an even faster rate .. it is perfect for someone that has a month or two before they go on a cruise and wanna lose a beer gut to look good on deck .. but as soon as they hit the ship buffet and start eating normal again .. that gut comes back in two or three weeks .. it is uncanny .. but it is a decent diet for people that just have to be eating something constantly .. they can snack on cheese, sausage, whatever ... you just have to watch the sodium and cholesterol intake on a diet like that ..

if you gradually reintroduce the carbs after the maintenance phase, and continue to exercise, no, you shouldn't gain it back -- but you and i know people rarely do this .. if you go to 50g carbs a day for 2 weeks .. then 100 .. then 150 .. you would be OK .. but most people, once they get their first bite of a cheeseburger again, can't stick with it .. that is because our bodies crave energy and crave carbs ..

i guess i just got lucky .. because my dad is candy freak .. i have just never had a problem at a birthday party saying "no thank you" to a piece of cake .. it just doesn't interest me ..

Sweets didn't get me in trouble although I am sure Coca Cola didn't help. I'm not sure I have had a coke in 10 months. It would probably taste like dessert if I had one now.
Savory and salty got me in trouble, not sweet.

yeah, salty will hurt you first, then sugary will do it second ... and, as you know, regular cokes are terrible sugar/sodium bombs ..
my mother was diagnosed with celiac's disease a little over a year ago and has to religiously stick to a gluten free diet .. i basically have to help take care of her and make sure she eats right .. i have had to study nutrition for the past year to make sure she eats right ... and it has really helped me personally too ..

Welcome! It's really amazing how this thread has taken on a life of it's own. I remember how it started in a different thread and Martini suggested I should start a thread about it. I have a knack for starting horrible threads apparently and never did it. Martini did it a few days later and...voila.
I check it almost every day. We should all get together one day and have a massive pig out! j/k

You know how you know when you are starving?
When all of the food on bizarre foods looks appetizing.

from the taco bell thread on here:
i told you all along..don't eat out if you're trying to diet. make the food yourself. its no wonder you've out-of-whack for several days after eating shite like that above
quote:
The document lists water, "Isolated Oat Product," wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent, autolyzed yeast extract, modified corn starch and sodium phosphate as well as beef and seasonings.
quote:
Beasley Allen law firm adds that what Taco Bell is marketing as beef only contains 36% meat.

i saw a diet guru's blog the other day; she said:
'dont spend your life on dieting. bust your butt dieting for a year to lose the weight then enjoy yourself'
makes sense. the trick is to always weigh yourself daily so you can head off any ugly trends before you've let a 5lb gain turn into 15.
