Proper "ham" for beans

What is the proper "ham" that is generally quoted for making a pot of beans?
I've interchanged any combo of smoked sausage, pickeled pork, tasso and andouille, but is there a specific cut of pork that needs to be used that I'm missing?
My only real takeaway is that some andouille isnt ideal because it can impart spices that can drastically change the flavor.

Where do you buy groceries? I usually buy the little bag of Chisesi ham cubes. It's cheap and perfect for beans.

I'll buy whole picnic hams when they go on sale and trim and cut them up in chunks to use for seasoning ham for beans and other stuff. I can buy them for as little as $.99 a lb. where already cubed "Seasoning Ham" sells for over $4 a lb.
There is a bone in the picnic ham, but that too can be used in making the beans.
Like already mentioned, ham hocks are also a very good choice.

Shanks as well.

I use smoked hocks. I haven't used pickled pork in years, but I'm going to use it again at some point because I've forgotten what it tastes like. I'll probably use it with the hocks.

This is my favorite. Especially when there's enough meat still on the bone.

I use a variety. More meat isn’t really a bad thing.

Salt meat is what I grew up with in white beans.

I always use a Honeybaked hambone with some meat left on the bone. That's my favorite.

What meat do you you use with this?

I’ve done before using smoked sausage, andouille, pickle meat, and ham cubes. Came out delicious and meaty.

You use it to help strengthen the ham flavor in the stock or water you are cooking in. You could use any pork product with this but OP was asking about ham with beans

I use pickled pork for white beans.
Some type of smoked meat for red beans. Either tasso, ham shank, smoked sausage or pickled pork.
You grew up in Terrebonne Parish?
