I become addicted to red beans and rice at Barksdale AFB in 1991. It was served in a bowl over cornbread. Haven't eaten it on the reg since, but going to tonight. What proper bread goes with it (in South LA)? I assuming the same bread goes with gumbo?

I like cornbread or toasted buttered French bread. I wouldn't want it served OVER the bread, though.

I don’t think there is a “proper” bread for this, nor gumbo

I go back and forth between french bread and homemade cornbread. When I was a kid, one of my schools served it with buttered bunny bread, so occasionally I do that for nostalgia.

Cornbread compliments it the best I think.
Hot buttered French bread ain’t bad though.

None - you got the rice there for your carb.

Jalapeño cornbread or catheads.

Growing up it was this, un-toasted, with a generous amount of Country Crock.

But now, I would go for a crusty baguette.

My mom always served it with cornbread and then the next morning breakfast was leftover cornbread with butter and syrup or honey.

+1

The sweet goes perfect w/ the savory of the beans, rice and sausage/andouille.

Eat whatever you like with them.

This looks pretty good to me.

For red beans and rice, it's gotta be cornbread. For gumbo, a good crusty French bread is my personal preference.

This is what I grew up with but I also really like cornbread crumbled into it if that’s what’s offered

I just really like RB&R
